Irony of the day: she never actually wore a wedding ring.

(I've never quite accepted this as the excuse for why she stayed married for so long)

I agree - that era would have been over in the 50s or 60s - not the 70s or 80s when she would have entered workforce.

I thought this was such an odd statement as well, it implies that she is much older. It's interesting to me that he doesn't really try to talk her out of it other than picking on the potential financial implications. He combats her by trying to undermine her thru the children. I got wonder if he was this way when they dated and she wasn't sure enough of herself as a woman to see it. I just can't imagine it's a trait that would have appealed to her and would have been a vote against marriage. Wonder how young they were when they got married?

The timeline doesn't quite add up. If she is 60, after 30 years of marriage she would have been 30 when they got married, presumably after they were both done with school. But she tells Rusty she helped Jack get through college before she got pregnant which would imply they were in their early 20's when they got married. So that would make her about 50 which just doesn't quite add up with her 20 years of experience in IA.
Something's not adding up.

I've been trying to figure that out for awhile myself. A recent comment by James Duff helped a little. He said she is currently in her late 50s, which would put her at about 55 when she made the comment to Gabriel about being separated for 20 years (after 10 years of dubious marriage). That would mean she got married around 25, which isn't too far off from when most people graduate from college.
I took the ring comment to be a bit more symbolic in that the guys around her wouldn't assume she was sleeping her way up the ranks if she were married. Also, she could've worn it up until she became Captain, and then didn't see the need.
But, yeah, it is still a little flimsy of an excuse. I guess I just figure she couldn't quite convince herself to give up on him. That does seem to be her biggest weakness.

Although I agree this is not an entirely defensible excuse to have stayed married to Jack all those years, gods I love the quote and I loved when she said it.
