Okay, turns out that irishredlass actually had sent me the letter "J", not "P" (I blame it on the cold that's turned my brain to cottonballs).

Did you watch both series, or just the first one?

There are two anime' series; Full Metal Alchemist was started at the same time the manga was being written. After about the first 8 to 12 episodes the anime' had caught up to the manga, but the author refused to allow the anime' producers to create filler. He did approve of them basically creating a similar, but ultimately alternative universe, version of the story.

A couple of years later the manga was finished, so they created a second anime' series, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The first few episodes basically repeat the first series, but then the new series takes a decidedly different turn. Some characters who were important in the first series have significantly reduced importance in the second. Some characters have almost completely different personalities and/or motivations. Some characters who were minor or even nonexistant in the first series are major characters in the second.

It sort of reminds me of the Harry Potter series, where the movies are basically a
