They're idiots, you know. Your intuition told you it was a shitty job; they actually did you a favor and confirmed it. Yeah, but I'm only getting $50/week unemployment...I'd have rather been getting a real paycheck and looking for someplace else to work at the same time ( ... )

Honey, I know being employed is better than unemployment. I hope you didn't take what I said as sounding too glib. But that's a dysfunctional environment. The fact they let you go sooner rather than later means you can concentrate on finding the right place. I'm hugging you right now. I wish you all the best.

Well, what a shitty situation. I am sorry you had to go through it, but it was a learning experience.

I could not imagine the superiors being assholes because they anticipate the customers being assholes. That just doesn't make a lick of sense to me. But, obviously it works for them since they are still in business.

Hopefully, you will be able to find something else soon that you will sincerely enjoy.

It's actually not all that uncommon a philosophy in the customer service industry -- I've gotten that line a couple of times at other places.

It's bullshit, because first off they're not hiring teenagers and 20-somethings with no work experience, they make it a point to hire middleaged and older specifically because the new hires already have experience in customer service.

But even if they DID hire younglings with no experience, it's an asinine philosophy! Abusing your employees because they'll eventually experience abuse from customers is a crappy way to allegedly train an effective customer service rep.

The most effective customer service environments I've worked at were companies that treated their employees well, and would never tolerate coworkers and/or managers abusing new hires...

Wait, is the no breaks thing even legal? In California, you have to give a 15 minute break after 4 hours of work and a half-hour break after 6 hours, iirc. Regardless of the exact breakdown, if they don't give you breaks, you can sue their asses. Though I think there's exceptions for certain industries, maybe agriculture - but I haven't heard that talking to customers on the phone is one of the exempt industries. I think a lot of states and many other countries have similar laws. So maybe they were not just peeved that you complained, but afraid that you'd blow the whistle? (Terrible way to handle it, if so...)

Sueing isn't always practical even if you have a technically slam-dunk case (companies having more lawyers handy to make your life hell most of the time), however, so it's probably best you're out of there and don't have to make the decision whether to fight them over whatever other shady, shitty practices they have.

Here in Connecticut I believe the law states that there has to be at least a 30 minute lunch break during any 8-hour shift, but I'm not sure if there's anything regarding breaks ( ... )
