I'm currently without a warden. We've been separated. [To the point.] That particular Doctor is still here. [So no one panics and thinks they've been left.]

[A pause.] This may be an unusual question, but for those of you that had friends- [He's assuming some people here will deny ever having any association with the word, ( Read more... )

Easy. When they help you out without getting anything for it.

Would you want them to get anything for it?

I usually think they would get something out of it, even if it's not their direct intention.

Well, maybe. I mean, we could both end up benefiting from it.

Yeah, I guess so. It's not a bad thing.

I would say that if they're loyal to you, you trust them, and you like each other, they could be counted as a friend.

...When I became friends with Omega, it was simply because he cheered me up after I got a bad mark. In quite the unimportant little test.

That raises something of a difficulty for me, as my concept of "trust" differs from that of most races. At least most of those on board.

But there are quite a few people I share mutual like of.

How different?

And that's something at least. Are they loyal to you? Would they risk themselves to help you?

[Private] Sorry, account changing is really hard right now D: majorum_pride September 15 2011, 19:48:17 UTC
We trust people to be themselves. Not so much personal safety, but rather for that person to act as we predict. The better we know them defines how close we've gotten.

I'll never trust anyone in the same way other species do, so if I'm going to have to interact with other races and never see my own kind again, I'm going to have to consider how I translate the perspectives.

But I know a few that would have risked themselves to help me. And at least one I would die for. [And have died for.]

How much I wanted to be around them, if I wanted more than a nod in the hallways or a casual 'you alright?' on posts.

You go out of your way to make time for them?

Yes, that too.

You probably would have been a very good captain. You've managed to command a lot of loyalty from the ones that like you.

You wouldn't want to be aboard a sentient and loyal ship with a crew?

...Ships do love having crew to entertain and pamper them. At least in my experience.

[Naoto is new at this friendship thing and been thinking about it herself.] When you'll go through anything for them because it's something they need from you, and when they'll do the same for you. But... not because they'll have your backs later. Because they matter to you as people, and because you matter to them.

[Mutters something. It begins with "That's probably why-" and then trails off.]

Have they always come through?

For as long as I've known them, yes. Even the ones I wouldn't expect to be reliable.

There were some that you didn't expect to be? [That bit is confusing to him.]
