Ever since I've been living here alone I've been paranoid about accidentally locking myself out of the house. Often when I go out one of the doors I unlock the other one just to be safe, but then much of the time I forget to lock that particular door again until much later, when I'm checking the doors at bedtime. I think once I even left the front ( Read more... )

I have the same issue about locking myself out. A lockbox is a great idea! Thanks for sharing.

I wish I'd thought of it sooner.

I have a keypad lock on my door. You type in a code and it unlocks. You hit a button and it locks. I love it. It also has a key.

I have deadbolts on the front and back doors. I do like keypad locks because you don't have to worry about losing your key.

We need to do that too. We used to have a spare key in the (always open) garage, hidden behind a wall panel. In this house we have five keys. We gave one to our friends across the valley. If all else fails I can walk there and get it, but it would be an hour back and forth, but I also want one hidden somewhere. The locker box is a good idea. I would still hide it because they are breakable with enough force and they just scream "key inside", but it is a barrier against someone just casually finding it.

I'm a bit nervous about having a lock box outside because there is nowhere to hide it around my house and I know they can be forced open, but this neighbourhood is fairly safe.

Is it customary to give a key to a neighbour? My parents did that and we are planning to. It might be safer and not as easy to access. Plus, there is someone who can actually open a door or have a look around or water the cats and feed the plants or whatnot when one is unable to.

It's a good thing you got an extra key. Once Barb and Rod locked themselves out of their house (they'd just gotten back from a trip and they were jet lagged.) and I had to let them in. Best to be safe!

I think one of S's local friends has a key if I do get locked out. S's son and daughter also both have keys, but both live some distance away.
