Wait, don't you walk-behind a push mower? What's the difference in a walk-behind?
I appreciate the offer. I've over-thought the mowing situation into a stand-still though, and I think I'm stubbornly stuck on this reel mower thing for now. Even though I don't even own the thing. Not saying it's rational.
Sloped yard huh. If kids didn't enjoy playing on the swing set in my yard I would be more inclined to just turn it into a rock garden. When yard work turns into pain instead of creative ways to trick yourself into exercise I feel like thinking outside the green lawn required box is important.
But don't listen to me, I'm on a weird kick today.
You'll be using the schools and the libraries soon enough (in theory, at least) so voting yes is totally self serving as the benefits will still be around to help your kids.
as for the rock garden option, I bet you anything that it would be more of a hassle to keep up with the weeds in one of those then pushing a lawn mower (even a person powered one) over it.
a) +1 for the override, as someone who doesn't have kids and doesn't plan to have any in the foreseeable future. I do make heavy use of the library and bike paths, and would like to start taking the bus more, but in reality I'm doing it because the recession sucks, and I'm happy to chip in a bit more of my own money in order to save my neighbors' livelihoods and my own government-provided services. I guess I'm a socialist like that (and by "socialist" I mean "person who understands the connection between taxes and services." :P )
b) Agreed on the unpleasantness of using a gas-powered mower. transversely recently read a study on how even the quietest gas-powered mowers cause hearing loss; yet another reason not to use the things
( ... )
Oh, also: I'd like to look into replacing my yard (or pieces of it, anyway) with something that doesn't need to be mowed. We've already got a good bit of clover growing, which is pretty and low-maintenance. I'll have to look into what my options are.
I gotta say, I really enjoyed my robomow (http://www.friendlyrobotics.com/). Its quiet, can be done at night and by itself. Another company makes ones with solar panels for 3x the price, but you could probably rig a solar charging plug cheaper. Mine is like the RL850 but yellow and uses a lead acid battery (it was their first model). The only down side is with mine is the battery which is a UPS leadacid battery that needs to be replaced every 3years or so.
I suspect its probably cheaper in the 3year time frame then paying someone else and better enviromentally if the were going to use a gas mower.
That's a good idea which I had initially rejected due to all the neighborhood kids running around - the idea of a kid getting a toe chopped off or something sounds pretty horrific. But I guess with lift sensors it might be safer? Might be worth talking to my neighbors about it.
Also, re the condo, could you leave some fliers about the 3% down deal out for taking whenever people look at the place? Have your realtor put it in the listing details too so people see it when they search.
We include FHA approval in our condo listing. If people get as far as looking at our place they will know about the 3% down deal. The big problem is people who don't bother looking for condos at all because they heard about the 20% down requirement.
