life changing decisions

I've been quite harsh on myself recently. It seems that when things go wrong, everything goes wrong. Ya know? The saying is true, when it rains it pours. I feel like sometimes when things spiral out of control like that I lose all of my focus. A good friend of mine is in the Marines. It's quite a bit different from the AF or Navy from what I understand. He joined for basically the same reasons you're considering it, and until a few months before he joined he was completely against it, thought it was nuts to join, etc. He has been disappointed. He hasn't traveled anywhere but one base and Afghanistan, and is expected to go back to Afghanistan. In some ways it's been good for him, but I feel like every time I spoke with him he was just miserable. A huge part of that misery was/is Afghanistan and the general attitudes of his superiors and others. Massive power trips, people taking themselves way too seriously, superiors are not at all open-minded towards other cultures and ideas, and the general feeling of indoctrination. I've heard the same sentiments from a friend of a friend (somehow, he was drunk at a party and ended up spilling his guts to me about being a Marine) and my mom's boyfriend who was a Marine for over 20 years and lived all over the world. Reserves is actually what I've been looking into most recently. They would ideally pay for my education and I would get to do some light travelling and once I graduate land an incredible job just for having the word military on my resume.
