Serenitatis
The moon had been high last night, and its light had shown through the gap in the curtains. He’d stared at it for a while, thinking about space dust and moon rocks and a world in a galaxy millions of light years away where dinosaurs still roamed. Then he’d rolled over and looked at Yukito, whose face was round and pale like the moon, but with eyes, nose, and lips instead of craters and maria. His lips were parted slightly, and his breath came soft and steady. He’d fallen asleep watching him breathe, with inhalations and exhalations resounding in his ears like waves rolling over his body.
The sunlight streaming into the room wasn’t enough to warm his toes, which had slipped out from under the covers sometime during the night. He tried to draw them back in and Yukito kicked out at him, catching him in the knee. The scent of fish and tamagoyaki drifted into the room, and his stomach responded weakly. Yukito was a heavy sleeper, not easily woken by food or cold or light or kisses. He kissed him anyway, because he could. Yukito’s unconscious reaction was to roll away from him, eyebrows slightly furrowed. It made him smile, and he took the opportunity to steal back some of the covers, which had the added effect of pulling Yukito back towards him. He looked just enough like a fairytale princess to make him want to kiss him again, in hopes that it would wake him from his enchanted sleep. It didn’t work and he resigned himself to not being Yukito’s true love after all. In compensation, he pulled the covers all the way off of Yukito and cocooned himself within them, reasoning that enchanted people didn’t care if they were warm or not.
Yukito finally stirred, so he pulled the covers tighter and pretended to be asleep. The way Yukito woke up was sort of like a baby bird hatching from an egg, all wet cracking sounds and weak struggling. Without sheets to constrain him, it took less time for him to get up, but more time to wake fully. He started shaking the pile of blankets before he realized that he could roll him over and peel each layer away. He could imagine his smile getting wider and wider the deeper he delved, and he couldn’t keep his own face from splitting into a grin an instant before Yukito kissed him good morning.
“Cover thief,” Yukito accused, in a tone that made it sound a lot like “I love you.”
“You stole them first! Anyway, you’re small, so you don’t need as much, but you always hog them to yourself, and you kicked me before, you definitely deserve-” Yukito cut him off with a kiss, then hit him with a pillow.
“Come on, let’s eat?”
He let their fingers knot together as Yukito pulled him to his feet and into the new day.
