Summer Dreams

Today’s lunch was a conbini bento with pork cutlets. Ikeoka came over with a bento and a styrofoam cup filled with coffee and sat down next to Jun. He got the lid off it and pulled his chopsticks apart and then buried his hand in his coat pocket. “It’s so cold in here, geez.”

“Mmm.” Jun pushed around the last of his rice. He wondered if Ikeoka wanted him to leave so he could take the seat he had already warmed up. Did Ikeoka usually drink coffee? He took a sip of his own, which was still a little warm. He couldn’t remember.

Ikeoka ate as quickly as ever. Jun couldn’t think of anything to say between his bites, so he stared out into space instead. When the eating sounds stopped he glanced over to see Ikeoka smiling at him. “What?”

“Nothing. Just looking.”

Jun looked down. Ikeoka had stolen his last bite of pork. “Huh.” He went back to poking at his rice.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

Ikeoka took his hand. “You’re freezing. No wonder you’re in a bad mood.” Jun dropped his chopsticks. One of them bounced off the plastic and fell on the floor. When he turned to pick it up, Ikeoka grabbed his other hand. “No need to make a face like that.”

“Mou.” Jun squirmed, but let Ikeoka guide his hands into his pockets. Ikeoka kept his hands on top. Jun’s face heated up faster than his hands did. “Your rice is getting cold,” he said when Ikeoka didn’t move.

“My Junjun’s already cold.” Ikeoka squeezed his hands. They sat like that for too long. Ikeoka let go of him and stood up. He picked up both bentos and the fallen chopstick. “Stay warm, okay? We’ve still got filming this afternoon.”

Jun looked at Ikeoka’s untouched coffee cup. “Okay.” He picked it up and took a big gulp.

“Help me study?” Ryousuke blinked blurrily and sat up to see Jun with a hesitant smile and a stack of schoolwork.

“I’m done with school, don’t drag me back in,” he said, lying back down and rolling over so Jun couldn’t see him smile.

“C’mon, please? I just need someone to talk things over with. You don’t even have to listen to me, you can even sleep if you want. I just don’t want my manager to make fun of me for talking to myself while studying again.”

“Like I could say no to you anyway.” Ryousuke sat up again and patted the sofa beside him. “Get comfy.”

Jun squeezed right up against Ryousuke and dumped a textbook in his lap. He opened one notebook, frowned, and set it on top of the textbook. He opened another notebook to a blank page, then pulled a set of handouts out of a folder and added it to Ryousuke’s stack.

“I thought you wanted a study buddy, not a packhorse.”

“You said get comfortable. This is what’s comfortable for me.” He shifted so he was leaning against Ryousuke. “All right, time for some auxiliary verbs. Starting with past -ki…”

Ryousuke stopped listening sometime around the hearsay usage of past -keri and let his head rest against Jun’s. He fell into a light sleep that was interrupted when Jun put his hand on his knee. “IkeP…”

“Whaaaat. You said I could sleep, right?”

“Do you mind reading me the bit in the textbook about the particle -te? It should have a sticky note next to it.”

Ryousuke grumbled but found the section. “Okay, ‘Te is a conjunctive particle following the continuative form. Uses include temporal, sequential, and causal connection. Thought to be derived from the continuative form of auxiliary verb -tsu.’”

Jun leaned back against him and sighed. “I wish you were my teacher. I feel like I remember things better when you say them.” He still hadn’t taken his hand off Ryousuke’s knee.

A shiver passed over Ryousuke and he wondered if Jun had felt it too. “Do you want me to keep reading?”

“Can you do auxiliary verb -nu next? Thanks. I really appreciate it.”

“Sure. Just a little longer, right?”

I am a giant loser and the only Japanese high school subject I am qualified to speak about is Classical Japanese. "Te" explanation paraphrased from Haruo Shirane's Classical Japanese textbook. I'm sorry.
