In advance, I just accidentally looked straight into a very bright lightbulb, and therefore can only see clearly in my peripheral vision right now, so I apologize for glaring errors.

Actually, selkies were both male and female creatures that could take the form of either seals or beautiful men/women. I suppose it would depend on the sex of the seal, but I never bothered to ask. (I almost typed sex as gender before I corrected myself.)

Selkies COULD take the forms of handsome men--I believe they often came to young maidens who would cry on the shore and their tears would touch the ocean, but I could be wrong so don't quote me on that--but I imagine more stories had them as young women. There are a bunch of stories where fishermen would find their sealskins on the beach and then take the women as their wives, controlling them through the sealskins. They'd often even have children with them, and continue living with the fishermen until they somehow retrieved their sealskins and returned to the sea. Actually now that I think about it, they remind me vaguely of the kitsune and yuki-onna stories from Japan--

I'm going to stop rambling now. Sorry.
