Character Notes:
Ema's parents died in a car accident when she was very young. Ever since they died, she's been raised by her older sister Lana. Ema greatly admired her older sister, at the time a famous detective on the police force and clearly one of the kindest people she'd ever known. In fact, it's very likely that this is why she wants to become an investigator in the first place, so that she could investigate these crimes with her sister, as an unstoppable duo. And it's due to this interest in Lana's work that sometimes Ema would tour the police department and Prosecutor's offices. For the most part, these tours would be brief and filled with very random questions, but everything changed on February 21st, when Ema was fourteen.
There was an award ceremony being held, where the King of Prosecutors trophy would be given out. Lana, being a very prominent detective, had to go to the ceremony, so Ema waited for her in Lana's office, which was shared with Damon Gant. There was a very powerful thunderstorm going on at the time, which made the power go out in the entire building. At the same time this happened, Joe Darke, a serial killer, was being questioned by some detectives. He used this opportunity to flee the room and try to hide in the shared detectives' office, which is where he ran into Ema. He grabbed her from behind and very nearly killed her. Luckily, Prosecutor Neil Marshall chased after the fleeing Darke, so he quickly came upon the scene and stopped Darke. There was a fight, but due to the outage it was very hard to see, except for when lightning flashed. Darke was quickly subdued, but Ema saw them fighting, wanted to stop her protector from getting hurt, so she pushed someone to the ground. Unfortunately, that person was Neil, who passed out too. She quickly passed out. When she woke up, Neil was dead and Darke was arrested again.
What happened while the lights were out, literally and figuratively? Simple. Damon Gant came by and murdered the passed out Neil, made it look like Ema did it, called in Lana, and then they both rearranged the crime scene to make it look like Darke did it. Oh, wait. Except that's not simple at all. Essentially, due to this chain of blackmail, Lana was promoted to Chief Prosecutor, and from around the same time, she became very, very cold to Ema. For two years, things proceeded in this fashion with Lana and Gant's control over her completely unknown. Nobody knew the extent of what happened, especially Ema, who was brought in to testify during the original case. She couldn't even speak at the time, instead resorting to drawing a picture of what she saw at the time, and she never did actually speak when brought into court. Still, at the time, she was dead certain Darke did it, and when he was convicted, it looked like it was all over for her, and life would go back to normal.
It didn't. In fact, the case was hardly over at all. Two years later, almost exactly to the day, Lana was arrested and charged with murder. Ema went looking for Lana's old lawyer friend, Mia Fey, apparently missing the memo that she died. Instead of finding her, she found Phoenix Wright, who she knew from Mr. Edgeworth's recent trial. She asked him to help her, despite Lana's wishes to the contrary, and he agreed for, well, reasons unknown to her. To make up for this, she helped him during the ensuing case by providing luminol and ~science~. It was a very, very long case, and once it became clear that this was related to the Darke killings all those years ago, Ema had a very rough time with it. Still, this time, when she had to testify, she actually spoke and felt much better following it. Still, at the end of the week, Gant was found guilty of both murders, and Lana had the weight lifted off her shoulders.
Lana and Ema started reconciling, despite Lana receiving a prison sentence for her years of forging evidence. A few weeks after this gigantic tangle started resolving itself, Ema went off to Europe to study forensics.
Ema is very, very enthusiastic about science, and forensics in particular. She's been known to spend birthday money on luminol, for example. She's equally eager about investigating, and loves being able to provide assistance, whether by taking notes or collecting fingerprints. She's a very bright student, and is always bragging about her latest scientific achievements and her plans for the future. Even though she's only a junior, she insists on introducing herself as a scientific investigator, although what exactly that means is clearly up for grabs. In addition, she generally a warm, nice person, and despite her clear lab rat status, seems very capable of making friends quickly and easily. She also has some very strange ideas sometimes, and her notes, despite her knack for taking them, are nigh useless. It appears they don't teach common sense in science class, and Ema's missed the important lessons if they did.
Despite her knack for forensics, she gets a little frightened and slightly sick when there's blood involved. Whenever something traumatic happens to her, or is otherwise brought up, she goes very, very quiet. In addition, there's a whole host of issues that stem from her involvement in the Joe Darke Killings, also known as SL-9, particularly where her sister Lana is concerned. Even after all this time, Ema admires her sister, and strives to be like her. While she doesn't particularly want to be a detective, she has a strong desire to work for the police, and chances are it's all because of this. However, that lack of common sense mentioned above can really come back to bite her. She's brave, yes, but she can easily get in way over her head, and not quite catch on to what's really going on around her until it's too late. She's also extremely naive, for someone who's seen as much as she has.
A headcanon post will be up by the end of the week!
