I would love canon era-ish but you don't have to be particularly accurate with 19th century French law.

Instead of going to Paris, Valjean and Cosette run off into the mountains where the bandits Valjean was accused of being part of hide out. Interactions with the bandits are cool (maybe Valjean saves one with his strength? Anything) or not. Just - you know, berry-picking, opportunity farming with his growing tricks, Valjean poaching and trapping, teaching Cosette about survival - wilderness porn. :)
