. background
Zack Fair was born in Gongaga; a small village located in the southern tropics and situated almost directly east of the well-renowned Cosmo Canyon. He grew up as an only child and a somewhat energetic one at that, making it almost inevitable that he grow bored with country life by the time he had reached his early teens. It was this boredom that later became the very reason why Zack ran away from Gongaga to the more exciting city of Midgar in order to enlist within the military.
Surprisingly, Zack was promoted to the elite forces of SOLDIER almost immediately after signing up and was promptly sent to serve on the frontlines of the war in Wutai. It was here that he earned himself a well-deserved field promotion to SOLDIER Second Class towards the end of the campaign, and just weeks before his seventeenth birthday, making him the youngest SOLDIER of that rank since Sephiroth. His career only went upwards from here, and by the time he was eighteen, Zack had been promoted once again to the rank of SOLDIER First Class and was working alongside Sephiroth on numerous missions.
One such mission however, was to be the end of Zack’s career within the military, but unfortunately not his life as part of Shinra. After the fated incidents in Nibelheim, Zack and a young trooper by the name of Cloud Strife were both mortally wounded by the madman that the war-hero Sephiroth had become, leaving them with no means to fight or protest as they were claimed as specimens for experimentation by Professor Hojo, the head of Shinra’s science department.
The next four years or so were filled with nothing but painful physical and mental torture for the pair, which came almost daily in the form of Hojo’s cruel and inhumane experiments. There was little chance of them ever being freed, and yet somehow Zack woke one morning to find himself in a desolute and ruined world with naught but his sword, a strange device left with an ominous note and no memory at all of what had happened to him.
It is here, in Discedo, that his story begins once again...
. relationships
AERITH » His first love and someone Zack still openly cares very deeply for. He worries about her safety, especially after having lost contact with her here in Discedo quite some time ago now.
ANGEAL » His former mentor and someone Zack considers to be a very close friend. In Zack's youth, Angeal could have been considered a father-figure for him within SOLDIER, though now that he's all grown up... well, their relationship is likely to be slightly strained given the circumstances under which they parted.
BARRET » An ally of Cloud's that Zack has found himself conversing with more and more frequently during his time in Discedo. Despite the circumstances, they've never actually met in person though Zack would consider him a friend all the same.
CLOUD » Zack's oldest and closest friend. He cares a great deal for Cloud and would do almost anything to see his best friend smile. Although he doesn't remember it ever happening, Zack died once in order to save Cloud's life and he would gladly do it all over again if it meant giving his best friend a chance to have the happy life Zack knows he deserves.
ELENA » One of Shinra Company's Turks that Zack did not know back in his own world but has since met here in Discedo. He has a bit of a soft spot for her, and was relatively upset when she died (albeit briefly) from the Atropos Virus.
GENESIS » An enemy almost right from the start. Zack's last mission as a Second Class SOLDIER was to work alongside Sephiroth in tracking down and disposing of the traitor, Genesis. In Discedo however, Zack seems to have disregarded the past and cautiously treats Genesis as a possible ally if not as an estranged friend of sorts.
HOJO » A Shinra scientist responsible for the four years Zack and Cloud spent in hellish captivity as little more than lab specimens. Zack is a lot more terrified of Hojo than he will admit to being, and he loathes him almost as much as he fears him.
SEPHIROTH » A former friend now turned enemy. Sephiroth was someone who Zack worked with often and held a lot of respect for, though regrettably their friendship of sorts came to an end when Sephiroth horrifically betrayed the military and consequently fought with Zack, leaving him for dead.
TIFA » A girl Zack met in Nibelheim during his last mission as a SOLDIER. He remembers being fond of her at the time, though he doesn't know her all that well. Since she is a good friend of Cloud's however, he's sure that will change in the future.
TSENG » A Turk and a former comrade of sorts. Zack is wary of Tseng and has no real reason to trust or distrust him despite having worked alongside him on presumably several missionsm including one to track down the former SOLDIER, Genesis.
_______
HARRY » One of the first people Zack met upon arriving in Discedo. He seems to be a mentor-type figure to Zack, taking on a role similiar to the one that Angeal used to have in his life. Unfortunately Zack has mysteriously forgotten Harry entirely, along with all his other memories of Discedo, and their relationship has inevitably suffered as a result.
LEON » A very good friend that Zack made during his stay in Discedo, though one who has also been forgotten entirely. Zack feels bad about forgetting him, thus he has been making an effort to try and get to re-know him and gain his friendship again.
RAZ » Another forgotten friend from his time in Discedo. Raz is a kid that Zack apparently took a liking to and was teaching swordsmanship to before his unexplained loss of memory.
VAATI » One of Zack's good friends made in Discedo, though also one who he has regrettably forgotten since his mysterious disappearance. Zack enjoys talking to him whenever he makes contact, which sadly isn't often enough.
. inventory
BUSTER SWORD » Rendered virtually useless to Zack in Discedo due to the suppression of his SOLDIER-enhanced strength.
FISHING KNIFE » Obtained via the charity of a stranger. The blade is approximately a foot long and in slightly poor shape.
LONG SWORD » Given to him by Barret. The blade is fairly old but long enough to suit him just fine as a primary weapon.
FIRE AXE » Loaned to him by Harry Mason when he first arrived as a temporary replacement for the Buster Sword.
DEVICE » Left behind by the scientists with an ominous note: Use this.
