What's up now

Both of my visitors have come and gone. And as they left, I wanted nothing more than to go back home with them. But I'm still here and up to my neck in homework. It's the end of term and I have two class seminars to give and two final papers to write. I think I have some good work done in all of them and should be able to get things done before ( Read more... )

Can you put on your hoop and maybe use some muslin to test the size and shape of a finished shawl? I personally know squat about shawl dimensions for this era, but are you in the historic knitters group on Ravelry?

I don't have a hoop yet, but trying out different dimensions with fabric is a great idea! Thanks! And no, I'm not, but clearly I should be.

I'm glad you got some time with your friends, even if it leaves you so flat afterwards. I get really bad homesickness so I am totally sympathetic!

I agree with your other friend's comment about trying it out in the right gear. You could use some fabric to imitate the shawl at different lengths to get a better idea?

Maroon and cream sounds a snuggly and nice combo!

Yeah, it was nice seeing them. I'm definitely going to try out something with blankets to get a size estimate. I'm excited to have a nice snuggly shawl for when it's cold. :) I guess the colours are a bit Santa Claus though... lol

LOL hadn't thought of the Santa Claus aspect of the colours! Here Maroon is the colour of the state of Queensland, and the pair to it is gold. So that's where my thoughts were more than good ol' santa!

It's my understanding that a common woven shawl size is 60" on a side. I don't know what the range in the period is, but large shawls are common. Measuring down the center, mine is 36" to the start of the stripes, and the fifty rows of the stripes bring it to about 44.5". I was aiming for a 60" length along the sides, but I ended up overshooting and hitting about 70". (One half doesn't wind up being exactly an isosceles triangle so calculating the length with the Pythagorean theorem didn't work out quite right.) It was a DK weight yarn, and I'm 64" tall, if that helps.

Thanks! I was looking at yours and the measurements are super helpful, especially since I'm also using a DK yarn. Based on this, I think I'll make the centre section bigger.

It looks like you have it figured out! You'll love this shawl :)

And good luck getting everything done! Vacation is so much better without things looming :)

I hope you know it's your fault that I'm making this shawl to begin with. ;p I've been wanting one ever since you made yours, which is so pretty and practical! So many of our living history events are outdoors when it's cold that it's going to be super handy.

Thanks! Slowly checking things off the list. Vacation is going to be for sewing! :)
