Not getting as much done as I'd like

I managed to get a mock-up done today of my ballgown bodice. I had to make a number of small adjustments, but didn't have time today to get to mock-up #2, which will also have a sleeve draft. I think it's looking good. Fitting the off-the-shoulder bodice is a bit tricky, though. I had the strap hitting right at the shoulder point, but after looking ( Read more... )

I am REALLY curious about that whole ballgown neckline/armhole dynamic. Some photographs and portraits show a "neckline" hitting exactly where my armhole seam is on my basic bodice. I've been planning to post a question on the Sewing Academy about that. I can draft it down lower, but I'm not sure how much arm motion should be allowed.

When I drafted up my pattern originally, that's exactly where I put the shoulder strap/neckline. But the majority of photos that I looked at showed a lower neckline, just off the shoulder generally. Well, you need at least enough range of motion to put your hand on a man's shoulder for dancing, right? Thanks for reminding me about range of motion; I totally forgot to check.

I know I've seen comments on the Sewing Academy about how little range of motion there is in a ballgown, (though I don't seem to be able to find the proper search terms right now to find them) so I really think you should expect it to be limited. You probably get just enough to get into a dance pose comfortably and to be able to feed yourself. :)
