Bodice pattern, finally

Yesterday I had some serious issues with my ballgown bodice mock-up. It was somehow much worse than the previous mock-up. Ugh. So I was apprehensive today. But I think I finally got a good ballgown pattern! Trying to figure out the off-the-shoulder bodice/neckline was the tough part. Here are some things that worked for me to get a good fit:

I find that in my off-the-shoulder ballgown bodices, I get very little range of motion. I just assumed that was how it was supposed to be.

I think so too. That seems to be the consensus. Thanks!

I've gotten the sense that movement was not required. If you were well off enough to have a ball gown and the opportunity to wear it, you were well off enough to have servants that would do anything that required a lot of arm movement. That may be a 20th Century bias that I hold, though. But there are plenty of MODERN fashion statements made that are uncomfortable or restrictive and the wearer simply endures (bras) or finds unnatural ways to do the task (walking in pants with the waist band under the butt cheeks) in the name of style and fashion.

That was my impression too. People who have worn off-the-shoulder bodices have told me that they find their movement restricted too, so it seems normal.
