Mornings

Jul 13, 2006 07:14

I've never really been a morning person, so it's kinda surprising to me to be waking up before my alarm goes off at 5am, waiting for it to go off, then getting up and starting work ( Read more... )

in the bid for extra hours, I'd recommend avoiding the uberman schedule - I tried it.. no good if you want your brain functional, I'm afraid..

Yeah, I remember you telling me about that - not something I'll be trying, I think :)

I think the key is to make the most of the hours I spend either being asleep or trying to get to sleep - efficient sleeping, for the most part. That means not lying awake for an hour or so, and not dozing for an hour or so before getting up - neither of which are particularly restful.

yeah, the old "hrmm, if I spent 4 hours less on email a day, and farting around on livejournal, by golly I'd get more done" syndrome.

I'm still struggling with that one. Hmm. It's been a toughie. I've got super efficient ways to do things, but it's the not doing wasteful things that stymies me..

Actually, I'm getting better and better at that.

It's a 'simple' matter of self discipline. Try to focus 100% on the one thing I'm trying to do right now. Email can wait an hour or two, IM gets turned off, have only the apps open that I need for the task at hand. Ditto books, tools, etc.

Next step is to split my RSS feeds out to two clients - one 'work' (ie, blogging) related, one purely for my personal interest - and close the personal one when I'm trying to focus. I already do that with browser sessions on different virtual screens, but can't do that with my feeds.

Little steps, all the time. Practise, etc.

I can see myself taking up zen style meditation - focus on not thinking for a period should help me focus on thinking when I want to - and on not thinking about the things I don't want to be thinking about.

At least I think that might work :)

I have started leaving one of the blinds open, so that I gradually wake up as the sun comes up (or the clouds get lighter, depending on the weather).

That, is the limit of my dedication to mornings.

Works fine in summer, but leaves you lacking in available hours in winter :)

I'm not particularly dedicated to mornings - but I like getting shit done (that I want to get done), and mornings are the best time for it at the moment...

Ideally, I'd like to hibernate during winter (:
