Summary: DAIDAI AND WATA ARE CLEARLY SET TO BE THE BEST FRIENDS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD OR SOMETHING. Or something.
Date/Time: Day 11, mid-morning
Though perhaps last night hadn't turned out terribly, Watanuki had on this morning found himself trying to work out an alternate solution to his... predicament. It would be nigh on impossible to go sneaking into someone else's dorms every night, and the Night Room had shown itself to not exactly be the best of places for a respite.
Well, it wouldn't be impossible to go sneaking off into a certain someone's dorm every night, it'd just be embarrassing.
And so on another glorious snowy Russian morning, he was trawling the halls for a new nightly safe haven, in case his room decided that 'being on fire' was to be the default position.
...He wasn't in such a good mood about it because of where he'd spent the night at all.
Trekking through the halls with no little enthusiasm, Daisuke was going on a fresh exploration seeing as there was still more of this huge place to be seen. The promise of a new day mixed with the pleasantness of the light streaming through the (barred, but he would ignore that) windows had put him in a very fine mood indeed.
This only magnified upon seeing a boy in the hall a few meters away, recognizing him as Watanuki after a few moments of inspection.
"Ponpon!?" He cried, running to catch up with his aquaintance and then slowing to walk beside him, tilting his head far up to see the boy's face.
"Woah, jeez, you're tall." He stated the obvious, looking in awe and forgetting himself for a moment.
At hearing the still utterly bizarre nickname - what was with the whole nickname things anyway? Kairi's had been weird enough! Did he just have a face that said 'please give me some obscure name' or something? Though it really didn't bother him so long as Yuuko never heard either of them - Watanuki paused so his new potential friend could catch up easily.
Smiling easily at the boy - though it slipped slightly abashedly at the height comment - he raised a hand in greeting. "Should I call you short now?" he asked jokingly. It was nice to see someone else looking happy so he'd let it slide for now. And probably forever, considering his current track record.
"What are you up to this morning then, Daisuke?"
He rubbed the back of his neck, an embarrassed grin appearing on his face. "Heh, you could. It would be true..."
After all, Watanuki towered over him, and Daisuke couldn't help but wonder how old the boy was... it was hard to tell, because he was really mature and tall, but his voice and face were young!
Regardless, he moved his hands behind his back to link there, strolling with the other and looking around the hallway with bright eyes. "This morning I am explorin'! This place is so hard to get a grasp on that I might be getting lost forever." He said with a sigh, closing his eyes before looking back up to the other.
"And you, Ponpon?"
Ah, it was nice to find at least one person who shared his interest in just walking round~! Watanuki found himself all but beaming; it was a welcome change to finally talk to someone who seemed to not only already be in a great mood, but might even actually like the place.
"Looks like we have the same thing in mind!" he responded brightly, clasping his hands in a cheery gesture. "I've already looked round a lot, but it just feels like you'll always find something new round here, doesn't it?"
Shuffling his feet out of habit as they ambled down the hall, Daisuke glanced up once more, ruby spies bouncing gently. "Yeah, exactly!" he enthused. "I could never run out of places to go."
He felt an excited blush heat his face, and he brought one hand up to brush his knuckles against his cheek absentmindedly in an attempt to calm it - quickly he aimed his head down to hide it. It had always been a problem for him...
The grin still shined in his voice, however. "Hey, d'ya wanna go around together for the morning, then? If you wouldn't mind company..."
"It feels really mysterious as well, doesn't it?" Watanuki enthused with a wistful expression. Despite the time he'd spent in Malaise - which was already beginning to feel like an awfully long time, even though he knew it hadn't been - the building itself had yet to lose it's charms and perplexity.
Wondering at the sudden brightness on his new companions face - had he said something odd, perhaps? He really hoped he hadn't embarrassed the other or something - but carrying on anyway since the other didn't seem massively phased, he smiled amiably. "That'd be great, Daisuke~!"
"Yeah, like there's ghosts and stuff." Daisuke agreed, a solemn tone lacing his voice at the subject of the supernatural. That stuff was scary.
Flush leaving almost completely just as quickly as it came, the red head gave a slight cheer, lifting his fist into the air in a mini-celebration. "Great!"
He liked the smile on Watanuki's face - it was nice to know that his company was being enjoyed and he wasn't being really annoying or anything. Really Daisuke was used to others coming and bothering him at school, so this was a different position for him to be in...
"Where do you think we should go?" He questioned, biting his bottom lip lightly in his excited state.
Laughing a little abashedly at Daisuke's comment, Watanuki nonetheless nodded in agreement. "Ah, you're right about that." It didn't seem wholly appropriate to say that his reason for exploring this fine morning was so that he could hide from said 'ghosts and stuff' that had decided to take up residence in the fine establishment.
He really couldn't help but to smile around the other boy, though! His enthusiasm was infectious~! So for the moment he would ignore all his night time woes and enjoy the company. It was a lovely day for making friends, after all~!
"Hmm, well I think I've been just about everywhere once, " he responded, tapping his chin in a thoughtful gesture. "So, this one is all yours~!"
His grin only widened when Ponpon surprisingly agreed with him. "You felt like that too? Huh~"
"Um, well . . ." Daisuke's favorite place so far was the art room, but he didn't want to revisit someplace already - his next thought was to go swimming, but would that be awkward? Snerking quietly, he raised his hands to hold onto the elbows of his sweatshirt. Probably.
Thinking of the pool only made the boy think of the time his pet With fell in the pool after following him to school; poor thing was really scared, but Hiwatari-kun saved him. He missed both of them a lot . . .
Clinging on his sweatshirt harder, Daisuke lost himself in his thoughts for a moment with a concentrated look on his face before realizing what had happened and jumping slightly.
"A-ah! Sorry Ponpon, I lost track of myself." He apologized, scratching his head again, ". . . are we allowed to go outside?"
It was all he could do to reciprocate his companions beaming smile, even though they probably weren't on quite the same wavelength. Tempting as it may be to go off on a tangent about how the hallowed halls were absolutely bristling with *things* of the more supernatural variety and how to him at the very least it seemed immensely hard for people not to notice it, not that he was saying his newfound friend was inattentive or stating the obvious or anything like that, just that it didn't seem like everyone picked up on it at first and it was just so obvious-- tempting as it was to go off on a tangent similar to this he was pretty sure Daisuke was just making an offhand comment, as opposed to some all-important statement as to the nature of the institution. So instead he continued with the safe approach of just agreeing, since he didn't need to scare off Daisuke with his - at times - fanatical approach to the mysteries of the world when he though other people might be just as interested (and perhaps perceptive of them) as himself.
Of course, this overly long internal tirade distracted him somewhat from the conversation at hand, enough so that at Daisuke's sudden jolt to attention nearly had him jumping himself. Really. If you know you're jumpy, it pays to not space out. Mentally stopping a little short at the question - he honestly hasn't even thought of going outside, even though it was such a nice day; well, sort-of nice, it was a bit hard to tell with the weather here - he gestured vaguely. "I'm not sure," he supplied with no less thought. "Want to find out?"
Seeing Ponpon startle a little as he did, Daisuke almost apologized again. It wouldn't do to go about scaring your new friends! But he didn't seem to upset about it, so he stayed quiet, observing the other boy's motions as he spoke.
Well, outside would certainly be a brand new adventure! He was proud of himself for thinking of it. After all, he had been watching the snow outside Malaise ever since he had come, but actually playing in snow was a rare occurence for him. The only time he had seen it was when he went on a field trip at school, and that vacation hadn't been pleasant.
"Yeah! I mean, it's probably not healthy to be inside for this many days, this place gets really stuffy sometimes! Even really cold air is good for you, I'm sure. So I hope they'd give us warm stuff to wear if we went out? We should totally ask the nurses." He said with half a mind, looking out the windows and wondering if they were going the right way for the nurse's station.
Smiling cheerily at Daisuke's excited suggestions - Watanuki wondered if it would be terribly impolite of him to inquire as to the other's age; the happy-go-lucky attitude he affected was making it a little difficult to judge properly - he nodded enthusiastically. It was, after all, more than lovely outside, and Daisuke had a point about the stuffiness. No better cure for feeling a little stir-crazy then some fresh air, was there? Even if it was a little chilly.
"That's probably a good idea," he commented offhandedly, looking around briefly to work out the best way to get back to where the nurses station was. He hadn't been paying much attention to just where they were going. "I think we need to go this way," he said, making an animated gesture to the left, "but I don't know if the nurses have any warm things to give out. Last time I went outside, they didn't have any gloves or anything, and it was really cold! And I was going to make some myself, but I got.. kind of sidetracked."
Daisuke nodded, taking a big step in the direction Ponpon pointed, walking a bit faster in his enthusiasm. It looked like today was going to be a lot of fun! Ponpon was a great friend, he could tell already.
"That's silly. They should have planned ahead; of course we would have to go outside sometime! And not everyone brough stuff to wear." Specifically, him.
It was really annoying how unprepared he was, as a matter of fact, and all he had as his sweatshirt, pants, and a hat in terms of warm clothes. As comfortable as those were, he doubted they would last very long against snow . . . ah well! He'd just tough it if the nurse's didn't have the right stuff. They could at least run around for a little while.
"Sidetracked? . . . You can sew?" Daisuke's attention span back peddled for a second. "Wow, that's really cool, Ponpon! I can't sew anything."
Tilting his head, he continued after a beat. "Well, we can go around for a little bit without getting too cold." The plans for a snowball fight were formulating in his mind.
"You didn't bring a coat with you then?" Watanuki asked inquisitively. For himself, it had seemed natural to bring just about everything he could think of as being useful with him - admittedly, what he actually owned from his pre-prescribed list of 'useful' was at a considerable deficit - but he supposed that if Daisuke had traveled from warmer climes he might not have considered the weather in his packing.
There was also the option that he'd had no idea just where he was going; Watanuki chose to hope that this wasn't the case. It seemed sad for someone to send off such a vivacious person without any warning as to what it was going to be like.
Moving away from that subject, he offered the other boy a reassuring smile. "Well, I have my old school coat with me, so I didn't ask about that sort of thing. And if they don't have any then I'm sure one of the nurses wouldn't mind lending you something~"
At Daisuke's surprise, he gave a sheepish laugh. "Ah, it's not really that great!" he said, waving his arms as though it would dispel the words. "I just know my way around doing household stuff like that. I'm sure you've probably got far more interesting skills!"
"Noo, I didn't." Daisuke intoned, swinging his arms. "I didn't plan very well for this, since it was such short notice. My mom gets real excited when she gets set on something, ya know? So when she found out about Malaise she decided it was best for me, aaand sent me off real quick."
Usually his mother would overpack everything for the boy, whether it be lunch for school or a vacation . . . now he considered sending her a letter about getting more clothes in a package from home, but the amount that she would probably send was daunting.
At Ponpon's smile and words Daisuke wiggled his hands around for a second before stuffing them in the pockets of his light coat. "Okay, that's great! And you totally are fantastic for knowing how to sew, I can't do anything."
He scoffed at his friend's modesty and wracked his brain for things he could do. "I can . . . do martial arts, sorta." He finally offered, scuffing his feet on the floor and grinning up at the other.
Well, that didn't sound like a horrible sob-story at all. That was certainly a relief. Though now it was really tempting to ask just why Daisuke was here, since he didn't seem at all annoyed about it, like so many other people were. Watanuki then found himself wondering if his mother would have packed him off as unceremoniously as his guardians had.
...But that train of thought was very abruptly cut off by the reminder that he'd never know, so there was no point in wondering about it. It would be much better to find out more about his new friend instead of dwelling on things like that. "She must care about you a lot, then~" he supplied with a soft smile. "It must be hard to be here, sometimes."
As much as he didn't think it anything special, it would still be rude not to accept Daisuke's compliment. He was being so nice, after all~! "Do you want me to make you some gloves if I get a chance? I've gotten pretty good at making them now~!"
As they arrived at the nurses station, Watanuki grinned back. "See, that's much more interesting!"
At Ponpon's words Daisuke threaded his fingers together inside the front pocket of his sweatshirt, tilting his head up to look at the ceiling thoughtfully. "Yeah, she does. It can get crazy sometimes with her, but I miss mom a whole lot." He realized he was talking far more about himself than he had heard his new friend speak of, and so Daisuke inched a little closer to the taller boy and grinned up at him again.
"Do you miss anyone?" Hmm, maybe it was rude to ask just in case it was a sore spot or something for Ponpon, but he was curious. It would only be fair to know as much about Ponpon as he did about Daisuke!
When he offered to sew something for the redhead he was surprised, but by now he wondered if his face would stick this way if he smiled any larger. Seeing as his hands were inside his coat (though he had done so to stop moving so much, it didn't exactly work when he was this excited), Daisuke gave a little skip. "Really? That would come in handy~ wow, thanks Ponpon!"
At the nurse's station he decided to stop arguing about who was better - it seemed they were both equal in amazingness! This would make for a grand friendship, he was sure - and instead requested the clothing needed to head outside.
The nurses agreed easily and soon he found himself with boots and a jacket both a few sizes too big, but he tugged Ponpon's hand just softly with both of his and smiled again excitedly. "Shall we go now?"
