This song always makes me tear up.   like I get to the second - to - last stanza and I LOSE IT EVERY TIME.  I've loved this song since I was a baby, but I totally get it now in a way I never did before.

Those lyrics are making me teary eyed and as soon my computer stops throwing a stupid shitfit I'm going to hunt down that song. It says a lot about us, doesn't it? People like us. Grew up with hard love. Or with no love and had to go out and find the hard love.

damn, I read this at work and it got me all blubbery again.  yes, what you said, all of it.  I also think I see some of this differently than maybe it was meant...The line "when Christmas to my birthday was a million years away. "  for me, those were the only two days my mom pretended to love me, so I looked forward to them, but only because it meant she would lay off me for a whole day.  Not totally, but enough to make a difference,  you know?  And the part about hard love just in general...I mentioned once to a friend in college how I was sad and missed my family sometimes, and she said "well you shouldn't,  because we are your family now."  yeah, sorry sweetie, it doesn't work that way.   I will still be sad and miss them, and they will always be my family, even if my friends are a better family to me than my relatives ever were.  I was talking to a friend on LJ once who has a complicated relationship with her family too, and I told her that I loved my mom with all my heart, and she said that she didn't,  that was a silly
