Just found out that there's a work in progress to make Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell into a motion picture. This one I will definitely go see if it ever sees it to completion!

books, movies

Ooh.

I suppose the book is wordy enough that cuts can be made when transferring it to film, but I still think they'll have to cut a lot out to condense it to a manageable chunk of a movie.

True. There were many bits that were in the book that, while I enjoyed them in the book, could be left out of the movie, or made into a montage of some sort. In any case, I'd be willing to sit through a lengthy movie for this story. :) For example..

[Spoiler-ish stuff ahead -- if you haven't read the book or don't want to be "spoiled", don't read. :D]

Most of the war in the Spanish penninsula I think could be skipped, as could the later battle at Waterloo. About the only thing I can think of in the war that might be important to keep is Strange's questioning of the dead Corsican (?) soldiers, as it helps to show that even then he was willing to take steps with magic that Norrell was not. Similarly, much of the dealings in Venice I think could at least be shortened, if nothing else.

Agreed. About all you need is to establish that Strange made a lot of his reputation by being a war hero.

(I need to reread the book -- I read it two or three years ago on the Bus Trip From Hell.)

Yup.

I've been re-reading it during my lunchtimes.
