Yeah, I mentioned on another lj that, with the test compressing the images to hell and back, it makes the simpler pictures stand out more than, say, the impressionist or medieval pieces, which got muddy from the jpeg artifacting.

There's also the fact that they're small. The Japanese prints were made to be about letter size or so to keep production cheap (thus they don't suffer as much from being smaller), while the paintings are usually huge and benefit from a larger crisper image.

Well, it's not so much the image selection (as I actually do enjoy the ukiyo-e style, especially over some of the other pictures it was being grouped with), as the personality traits that are supposed to go with it. :D

1) That's a much nicer print than any they showed during the test. You don't usually see such indirect yet sensual shunga

2) My problem is that, as a collector of Japanese prints, I know too much. I like kacho-e (nature and scenery prints) more than bijin-ga (pretty girl prints), samurai prints, kabuki prints, or shunga ("spring pictures", or, as we would say, porn.) The ones in the test were mostly bijin-ga.

Ah well, another case where ignorance is, in fact, bliss.

*bow* Your knowledge truly outshines mine. To paraphrase someone else (don't remember who), I might not know art, but I know what I like.

In this case, my favorite type of ukiyo-e would then be, like yourself, the kacho-e prints. Then again, I prefer scenery in just about all types of art. *shrug*
