That thing about mercury and silver amalgam is more just widespread Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt than reality (http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=138#more-138). It has a similar basis to the vaccine scares over mercury, although perhaps people aren't getting as fanatic over it.

However, I have had issues with old silver fillings coming loose and needing replacement. I guess they just don't grip as well after 30 years of chewing.
