Journal Entry - Garrett is a Jerk (aka the epic battle that really wasn't)

Mar 29, 2005 09:13

My lack-of-language-skills woes were quickly improved by a nice large battle. I don't have to be able to speak the language to dismember things. We were only taking down Myth Drannor- no big deal, right? I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was sure a lot less than I thought. I think we have Wahid and his tendency to explode to thank for that one. You know, in that battle, I took down a whole dragon by myself! Well, me and Gedwin, anyway. He's pretty good with those swords. It was a good way to brighten my day. I felt kinda bad for those kids we passed, though. I don't think the elves were being too merciful. I mean, I don't know the whole story and it seems the elves had every right to be vengeful, but those kids were just KIDS, you know?

I stopped worrying about that pretty quickly. We got the town under control and I hadn't heard from Wahid, so I went looking for him. I think it was about the time we found his pants in the crater that I decided something not-so-good happened to him. So...I sat down and prayed. I was able to reach him, at least, even if all he could give me was a quick "I'll be back later" message. I hadn't really been paying attention, but if I had, I probably would've noticed Garrett making off with the big black orb- the OTHER thing we found in that gigantic half-the-city-sized burn zone. I probably would've told him that messing with it was NOT a good idea. And he probably would've told me where to stuff it and grabbed it anyway, if his later actions were any indication.

Anyway, the elves came back to us and asked us to go scout out a castle to the north for them. I declined, because I'm really pretty terrible at staying quiet and paying attention, and I wanted to be in the city when Wahid got back. I was able to get Wahid's clothes back from Garrett before they left, which turned out to be a good idea....a couple days later, Wahid was punted through a portal and into my tent. I handed him his clothes (and tried not to blush), and he almost immediately asked about that orb. When I told him I thought Garrett had it, he wanted to head out immediately.

On the way north, I noticed that he...was kinda glowing again. I asked him about it, and it sounds like he had met up with the...guy who was evil and on par with Ao's power. I think I'll just start calling him Big Evil Guy. Anyway, in Myth Drannor, and they kinda fought and exploded each other. And even though he was back, he kinda didn't have all his cool deity powers here with him. That kinda sucks, but then again...he seemed to have to worry about how he was using them all the time. Maybe this isn't so bad. I imagine that divine nullifier thing will still possibly affect him, but maybe he'll have a better chance or at the very least last longer against it the way he is now? I hope.

Garrett and Gedwin actually happened on us while they were traveling back. Wahid was busy sleeping (and, um, glowing) and I was surprised to see them. I was going to let Wahid sleep, but then Garrett started acting weird and...well, when I told him Garrett had pulled out the orb, he woke up with a jerk. Teleported Garrett away, then carefully dropped the thing in the chaos plane. May it rot there. Or not, actually, since I'd rather the chaos plane not get corrupted. May it...I dunno, turn into a puppy or something. Leave us alone, anyway.

Then I thought I'd actually get to sleep, except for the fact that Willy showed up. Remember when I said that Garrett had been messing with those cards, and that something was going to come back and bite us in the ass later? Well, apparently that only applied to Garrett. Willy showed up in full pit fiend form and attacked him. I was about to get involved (although frankly, I don't know what was going on, so I didn't know what to do) when Wahid told me that this was because of those cards. I asked him if Willy was evil and he said no. So I sat down next to him and we watched. Well, he teleported us a ways away and then we walked back, since we were a bit worried about getting hit with stuff. Gedwin apparently had some sort of "I'm this specific monster, so I want to fight this type of monster" thing, so he got involved and took a lot of damage himself. When we got back to the campsite, Willy was gone, Garrett was in bad shape, and Gedwin needed some help. I helped heal the both of them up, and we continued on. There really wasn't much else to be done about it. I don't know if Willy will come back or what. I DO know that Garrett was pretty pissed me and Wahid didn't help, but seriously...he got himself in his own mess there. Why should we have done anything? And I healed him afterwards besides. That was helping...

When we got back, Wahid went to the Elven Head Guy and asked if we could go see 'the Tree'. Unfortunately, one of his godly abilities was to know the language, and now he didn't have that. Gedwin had to translate for him. I felt a little relieved at not being the only one anymore, but...the reactions were obvious. Like suddenly Wahid wasn't important anymore. It was weird. Anyway, they told us we couldn't go, only elves could. So we sat around for a couple days until they came by and told us that we COULD go, suddenly. I have a feeling everyone they sent down there died, considering what we found, but....it was important that we get to the tree, so we headed in anyway.

We were counting on Garrett to disarm the traps, because he's terribly good with that sort of thing, and the rest of us can't do squat with it. Granted, Gedwin didn't necessarily need to shove the poor guy in front of the doors....I mean, he's good with traps, he's not a decoy. Things started going sour from there on. The very first trap we get to, Garrett gets us hit with lightning twice. Which was actually less of a problem than I expected. But he figured it out and we go through. Then he gets to this huge room with lots of strange things in it, but most decidedly NOT a magic tree. Then he had the nerve to get ticked at us when we tell him to keep going. I could've overlooked it, due to the fact that he'd had quite a few bad days (even if they were self-inflicted) and he had practically been tossed at a door. But then he insulted Wahid. And that...I can't believe him. Or I guess I can, because I saw it early on. He switched so quickly from Tymora, and he was all about what Wahid could do for him....it was sickening to see his favor turn once the guy started glowing again. And to think I had been worried that he'd be better at my job than me.

At least Garrett appears to have taken up being a chaos mage, and he DOES appear enthusiastic about that. With everything Wahid's told me about it, though...they usually don't last too long, especially if they aren't careful. And Garrett doesn't strike me as being terribly careful. Like everything else, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Anyway, we were getting ready to have the fight of the century, except we really didn't have the time, and it was obvious Wahid just wanted to keep going. In the interest of moving things along, we both dropped it. Garrett passed up several doors and went for the one on the end, which appeared to contain boiling acid. Great. Wahid blew open a couple of the doors and luckily one of 'em was a staircase down. The second floor wasn't too much fun either, and I believe acid was also involved there, too (although I don't entirely remember). Then we were at the bottom floor. There were darts and it was very dark, and statues of petrified people. There were three basilisks, which Wahid mostly took care of. During the fight, though, Garrett was petrified. I found that I could fit him in my bag of holding, so we took him with us until we could find something to help him.

Then there was no way out. The way back had been closed off, and the way forward was a dead end with a dagger and runes telling us to kill ourselves with it. Joy. I had, of course, thought this was ridiculous and looked for a way to get around it. After a period of minimal searching, Wahid went ahead and plunged that dagger into his heart.

...I didn't know what to do. I mean, I thought maybe it was a trick and would teleport you or something, but no...Wahid was just dead. And then Gedwin did the same damned thing! And I was sitting there with two corpses...in the dark....next to several stone used-to-be-people.

I...I tried everything I could think of. I messed with the locks, I tried finding a secret way out, I tried stupid things that didn't make any sense and I won't bother repeating them. I tried praying, but I couldn't even reach Wahid. I wondered if I should just go ahead and do it too, to see where it would take me. But what if they needed me back there, alive, for something? For a ressurrection, or...or...I don't even know. I just- I couldn't do it. I wonder how many days would've had to go by? I had my ring, so I could've sat there for awhile. So I just watched over the bodies, wondering why Wahid didn't just ask me to do it myself...that would've been so much easier on me. But if he was the sort of person that would ask such a thing, would I be following him? Would I even like him? ...

Anyway, now that I've gotten that out, I don't think I'll ever speak of it again. After three days, Wahid and Gedwin suddenly started breathing again. I was so relieved...you have no idea. I had been hoping that something like that would happen, but I knew it was a pretty far-fetched hope. Wahid told me they'd been in this somewhat undead-kinda-place, with a bunch of old, undead, good elves. It sounded like the tree wasn't helpful, but they did find out more about the Divine Nullifier. And that we had to go back to Arasyns (whose real name is Therion or something), because he knew more about it.

When we got out of the tower, the Elven Head Guy fixed up Garrett. Then we got ready to leave. I seem to remember that Garrett tried to get some magical stuff from the Elven Head Guy, and that didn't go well. I wonder if he would've been able to make a deal if Wahid was still godly powerful. Hmmm...its funny how people react to things. It's not as if Wahid isn't the god of chaos anymore...and you'd think they'd be concerned about pissing off a god. Still, it might be better like this- more honest, at least. I'm a big fan of knowing what people actually mean when they say something.

Anyway, it was back to Saerb and the portal to Cormyr. Then it was Rygar Valley and the Purple Tower. I think I'm going to have to glare at a lot more people from now on. Arasyns was gone and we ended up talking to the rat. Fenrir was in an absolutely terrible mood, but it sounded like the situation almost demanded it. He silenced both Garrett and Gedwin, which was actually kinda nice....we really needed to get to the business at hand, and really...do they think the rat's never been insulted before? What's that going to accomplish?

Anyway, Fenrir told us that Arasy-Therio- oh, hell with it- Purple Wizard Guy was currently underground, in the illithid city. He also confirmed our suspicions that the Big Evil Guy is going after specifically Wahid, and that Wahid's going to be the target of the next ritual with the Divine Nullifier. It was nice to hear SOMEONE say that Wahid was important in the grand scheme of things- after all, he is the only one who can handle the whole chaos thing (especially chaos magic).... Hopefully, Purple Wizard Guy will be able to tell us more about the Nullifier and what we can do to stop it. Right now, I'm 0 for 2 on breaking glass-like enchanted objects. I doubt that'd work anyway. We'll figure out something.

I just wish we didn't have to go underground again. I can't stand not being able to see. Especially if we're going to be fighting more icky octopus-headed guys. I'd like to get something to help me see, but I don't want to hold anything up....I think I'll just have to deal with it.

This is weird...I wonder where I am now? I can't seem to reach Wahid.
