Having now been away from Sydney for over a year, it is interesting to look at it from with some perspective. I am sad to see that the same fights are happening and the same people are involved ( Read more... )

I think there's something poisonous in the water here, there are the same problems with every subculture I've touched since arrival.

It's not just me is it? I mean, I have been here and involved in the gamer scene and there are the usual likes and dislikes, but there is nothing like the level of evil shit that happens in Sydney. I miss the people like crazy, but I think you might be right about something in the water...

Whilst I'm normally quite content to keep my nose as far away from all this as possible (It make's life a lot easier) the current burst of drama has almost got me wanting to try to keep up with the goss. *embarrassed look*

Isn't there a law saying it's not a proper gathering of gamers unless we're slinging shit about something?

Naturally. The thing is we're pretty big as far as an extended social group goes. However, because we're connected by a hobby, instead of simple friendship, there's always going to be personality clashes.

It's not the Sydney gaming scene, it's a few people in it. Although not the same people each time which probably makes it look worse than it is. Maybe there is a roster or something ( ... )

But you, much as I hate to admit it, aren't really a part of the culture that's being referred to here.

Sucking at grudges is pretty awesome.

If you just brood on bitterness and resentment (... for years) then it's going to fester.

Moving so far away, you've pretty much been forced to leave things behind. You had already begun changing into a different person anyway, so it's not surprising that you find all of this upsetting now.

On a happier note, James H and I were talking about clix tonight and I remembered the Flash teams you used to like playing. :) I hope if you ever come back to Sydney (if but for a visit) you'll have a game with us again.

James, I will think very heavily about bringing a flash team with me when I come back. I used one at a convention here and destroyed the demo reps team which kinda upset them :(

But in regards to this post in general, I was beginning to think this even before we left, but the distance has helped me to see it more clearly. I'll talk to you more about it in person (read - when I am not tired from Karate and ninjutsu).
