My general impression is that PhD programs are generally aimed at very technical or academic careers, while masters programs are more about developing a specific set of practical skills. I have also heard that PhD programs tend to offer more funding, though I’m sure this varies significantly by field. You’d be giving more back in terms of research or teaching or whatever, and there just aren’t as many PhD students. So in some cases it might be more feasible financially, even though it’s more time
