Photographing Artwork

Now I wish I knew how to photograph my artwork better. I just joined Deviant Art, and uploaded some pics of paintings I already had on my computer. I would love to get higher quality images up, though. And most of my better pieces are too big for me to scan. I've got a great digital camera that we received for Christmas ( Read more... )

Marie got me a self-help book for artists a few years ago and it's got a chapter on photographing artwork. I don't remember much of what it said, mind you, but I think lighting is important. (Sounds blindingly obvious when I say it like that, huh?)

Hmm.. do you have a title? I'll look up the book in the library.

I definitely have lighting issues. With the flash, I get a glare. Without a flash, I get blurry images that are usually too dim. I think I might need tripod and a direct frontal light that isn't the flash. Maybe with some sort of shade for the light to diffuse it.

It was called "Taking the Leap" I think they had a diagram of two lights on either side of the camera pointing at the artwork (so the light isn't bouncing directly back to the camera, but also the work is illuminated fully) that's just what my (poor) memory recalls.

And I've been spending too much time doing SCA stuff, when I read "Do you have a title" my first reaction was to say "Yes, Baroness." heh.
