Oh sweet! Is that what the 'tree-people' look like? It's a great visual.

Looking at it begs a question (how much of an old time sci-fi geek am I) - how do their visual senses work or do they have any?

That is indeed an example of the Czanik species.

As for their visual senses, I'm no biologist, but the space opera geek in me says that they receive visual stimulus through their "leaves" but, because it's distributed over many focal points, the Czanik have a very different view of the universe than world a binocular Terran would.

I'm sure someone who's better at spinning biological gobbledygook could come up with an even better answer.

I would imagine that a plant-evolved species primary 'visual' senses would come from an acute photosensitive reaction, combined with an advanced and highly developed electrocreception system not unlike that found in certain primitive species of fish. The combination of the two would provide a rough equivalent of a mammals' visual senses, but would ultimately be so different as to be virtually indescribable.

Did someone ask for some biological gobbledygook?
