A number of you know that I've begun helping a friend,
Debbie, who wants to become a dress designer and hopefully turn that into a livelihood. For years I have had a bunch of ideas for what I'd like to wear and what I think would sell well in modest communities but since I don't sew I've done nothing with those ideas. Last week someone on

I've taken some fashion design courses but I've only sown by hand. I'm also looking to pick up a decent sewing machine and learn to use it so I just might follow to see what kind of responses you get....

I have a few friends that do semi-professional sewing and they seem to think fairly highly of Husqvarna Viking (http://www.husqvarnaviking.com) machines but they are expensive.
I bet there are people on either modest_style or egl that could give advice on which sewing machines they like & why. If you do decide to ask over there I'd love a link to your posts so I can track the comments.

I also suggest the community Steam_Elegance for more modest steampunk fashions. I've found quite a few frum people there, as well as non Jewish people who are returning to more modest dress, but wanting to do it with a certain flair.
I was at a Steampunk event this last Sunday, and it was noted how refreshing it was to see so many people with their clothes on! Over the last 5 years or so, the Goth scene has gone from "Morticia Addams" to "strippers in black fishnets", much to the dismay of anyone over the age of 25. Steampunk has become a wonderful alternative for people who enjoy lovely clothes, but without the fetish aspect attached to it.

Your outfit for the Steampunk university was fantastic and I would have linked to it but your entries are f-locked which I did not realize until I'd written this great post about you. LOL.
I see you know my step-brother [info]industrialsteve from the steampunk community I mention in my post. I occasionally went clubbing with him years ago. 80's night and a good dinner out worked well at convincing me to go outside my comfort zone. I used to loved the looks the 3 of us would get walking down the street with me in prudish and boring and a totally unfashionable dress, my step-brother in goth (?) with a mohawk (I think), and my step-sister in a Chinese based dress. I loved watching his hair change, on the visit in MA this past ( ... )
