I ate nothing

Nor would I do so. What need have I to know your secrets?

And any who have eaten anything with my name: Speak it to all if you will. There is nothing I would not speak aloud if asked. I am justice. I have no fear of the truth.

I envy you, Uriel.

I did not wish to inspire such an emotion in you, Phoenix, but remember you are not as I am. You are mortal, and despite what weaknesses I have seen, despite what can be guessed of your past, you act with honour and kindness, and thus I judge your soul, in balance, to be good. Be heartened by this and know that any dark secrets you hold will be weighed in the balance against your heart.

Thank you. You've always been kind to me, Uriel. The things I'm doing now, why I'm here, maybe I was also given a chance to do that. It's just...it's really strange to talk to justice face-to-face, especially since it was hard to uphold justice in my world. But still, I try.

The harder it is to uphold justice, the more those around you despise it, the greater is your good in doing so. Harder won and all the more beautiful are the flowers grown in stony ground than those grown among lush greenery.

Your traitorous acts are all laid verbosely bare?

Let it be so. My acts are my own. I bear the burden of them, and knowing them cannot harm me.

Almost everyone is afraid of the truth in some way or another.

Almost.

I don't need to taste your candy heart to know your truth.

No, you would not. And for that I am, finally, glad.

But I, perhaps, would require yours. Parts of you are mystery to me, Alex.

Why don't you simply ask?

Your secrets are your own. I would not ask for them, except in great need, though I know it unlikely you would deny me. My respect for you is too great.

That’s an admirable feeling, and stating it so publicly might discourage anyone who intended to use that they know one of your secrets to try to get you to react a certain way.

…you are “justice?” Do you mean in the literal or the metaphorical sense? Either seems possible in the City, and that sentence makes me curious.

Alas, it did not prevent the Morningstar attempting to use a secret I would reveal to anyone against me. Which is to be expected. There are several here of my kin or my distant cousins who would.

For many eons, El set me as judge of the dead, deciding whose heart was good enough to enter paradise and whose should be damned to a fit punishment in Hades. I was born to be justice and that is who I am. Thou shalt decide for thyself whether that is "literal" or "metaphorical".
