Seeing as you're our "new commandant" now, is anyone who is even possibly compatible being sent out this time too? [It'd be nice to know if he has to worry about possible shift incompatibilities or not. And that's not a hint of disdain in his voice. No wait, yes it is.]

Shift incompatibilities will probably occur. There's no way to estimate who will be affected and how, so prepare yourselves accordingly.

There isn't? [A curious eyebrow raise.] There seemed to be last time. [Huh, maybe Bill was better at math than he thought.

Or maybe there just weren't any fours.]

Not all situations will involve the same variables. This war is ever-changing, so get used to it.

Or, could it be you don't care enough to find out?

If that's what you want to believe.

[She honestly doesn't care.]

Well, was Bil really that much better at gathering surveillance and information than you are? The first time he's not around and we have very little to go on. Ever heard how a prepared solider can fight better, friend?

Are you so weak that you need someone to hold your hand, Vash the Stampede?

This battlefield is different. Consider all others before to be a simple skirmish in comparison.

[Huh, haven't been called that by someone other than Legato in awhile. Not that he really cares. It's been used one too many times to get a rise out of him from those who wishes him harm to get any real use from it.] It's not me that I'm worried about. You're sending in people that don't know the first thing about fighting. I guess you could say instead of spending my time trying to find the best way to defeat your enemy I'm, shall we say, wasting it, trying to figure out a way to keep those who can't protect themselves safe.

Just because someone doesn't know how to fight does not make them a coward. I refuse to ignore them because they are forced into a situation they cannot be ready to handle. Maybe you should reconsider sending out those who are unable to fight so those who volunteer can better focus.

[There's no mockery in her tone as she replies, only chilling calm.]

In this world, people no longer have the luxury of being a noncombatant. You all live in a protective bubble, unaware of the state of the lands outside your barrier.

Don't assume that a moving speech of cowardice and voluntary service will mean a damn thing in the real world. You're lucky to live as peacefully as you do, and thousands of good men and women have died every day so you have food to eat.

[He quiet a moment before speaking again. He doesn't doubt that people have died, but he's not ready to take everything you say at face value either.] Maybe we'd understand our position and what you sacrifice to make it so comfortable better if we were told more of what is really going on.

And it still doesn't change the fact that sending out those who are not ready to fight will only add more to those who have and may die.

Perhaps their deaths will teach them that they can't afford to be unprepared anymore.

I thought commandants were suppose to worry about the care and welfare of their soldiers. [Yeah. He's figuring out arguing is pointless with you.]
