LJ Idol - Week 16 - Reinventing the Wheel

Feb 27, 2012 15:45

There's a saying that many people from my generation were introduced to modified as a joke:  If it's not Baroque, don't fix it!  The reality in the hidden wisdom that Cogsworth shared with me has always stuck with me.  If something isn't broken, don't fix it.

Those of us familiar with U.S. History know that in 1920, with the ratification of the ( Read more... )

*I didn't know that*.

Holy crap.

I wonder if Louisa May Alcott knew that?

Go figure.

You know what else is funny?

The RC Church taking away the woman's right to be an ordained minister, and then pretending like it was always ever that way. Good thing we women showed them...oh, wait, they haven't seen that light yet.

I love the weaving of little-known history into this. Bonus points for that. C3

I'm pretty sure she did. Ironically, I was inspired by watching an episode of Little Men!! ^_^

Well, here's hoping they see the light soon! (Maybe in the next 148 years?)

Thank you, my dear! Researching actually changed the whole direction of this piece. It was supposed to be how giving women the right to vote was the "reinvention of the wheel", but come to find out, the darned wheel was working right to start! The men just decided to come along and break it for sport!

I actually didn't, either! In researching for this to get dates, I discovered this. My original idea was that giving women the right to vote reinvented the public's role in our government, but you know, leave it to men to break what's already working just fine and screw up my writing idea!! (Yes, that is a sexist remark, and no, I'm not going to apologize or be PC about it.)

Interesting!

And I won't get into modern day politics, but I can see some correlations with how we seem to want to go back in time with some of our laws. I guess that's not a new concept :)

Absolutely!! I wasn't going to bring it up either, but it was tempting to go into detail about a few recent things. Men screwing with women's rights again. Quit breaking things that are working just fine. Improve them, please, but quit breaking them!

Exactly. I don't think you even have to go into recent events toile your point clear. I think it's more subtle this way, which makes it more powerful.

Great piece. Somehow, after minoring in Women's Studies, I actually didn't know a good deal of this information.

Also, check your grammar in the first sentence of the last paragraph. :-)
