Tomorrow Justin and I are continuing our tour of vegetarian restaurants by hitting up Pittsburgh. We're spending the whole day down there so... anyone know of anything interesting to do in between all the eating? Good vintage/thrift stores, bookstores, yarn stores, whatever.

But yeah. I'm leaving at 9AM tomorrow, so. Suggestions! Please!

Totally unrelated: have you read David Mitchell's 'Ghostwritten'? If not I think you might dig it. It's my new obsession.

I have not, but I will! I've been carrying around the same already read book for a few weeks now because I just can't find anything decent looking at the library.

Have you ever read anything by Ruth Ozeki? Her stuff is pretty awesome. But I think I recommended that on my journal proper, so. It's no special recommendation (sorry). My Year of Meats and All Over Creation are her two books.

A girl in my chem class lent me 'My Year of Meats'. I liked the message being a faux vegetarian. Maybe I'll try her other one.

David Mitchell can write weirdly like Haruki Murakami, Ha Jin, and Martin Amis and sort of goes back and forth between lots of different characters. It's neato. Maybe a bit gimmicky.

That's like my favorite city (besides Philly, of course). Pittsburgh has lots to do! You should go to the Mattress Factory -- it's this really weird museum that I'm sure you'd like. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is really cool, too -- the rock/crystal exhibit is AMAZING, as is the dinosaur part. Since (I think) you're underage, I'm not sure what else to recommend because there are some nice bars to go to but you can't. You should go up the Funicular -- it's the incline on the side of the hill. It's cheap and really cool to get to the top and check out the whole city -- at night or during the day. At the bottom of it is this neat little mall where outside there is a fountain that has little fountain/light shows that cover the industrial history of Pittsburgh. Also, check out the Three Points -- it's the intersection of the three rivers that meet in Pittsburgh. Nothing special; it's just a nice little park to have a picnic in and sit by the water. It's right next to downtown, too, so you can hit it up in the middle of a day of ( ... )

It does help! Knowing a specific neighborhood to hang around in is always nice. My mom and dad lived in that area about thirty years ago. Crazy. I'm not of age, but Justin is and well. Doesn't matter about bars anyway, since we're driving back tonight, and well. Drunk driving is pretty uncool (so would be being stuck designated driver for three hours! Yikes!)

The Mattress Factory was weird.as.hell. Some of the stuff was really really cool, but then the rest just made us go, "Huh?". Like those bleachers made of PVC pipe? Wha? I was really excited to see Yayoi Kusama's stuff up close in person though. And the fact that we came on half price Thursday REALLY made it worthwhile.

Have you ever been to the Aviary? THAT is something to see. No penguins, but half of the birds in the two bird rooms are so tame that they'll let you pet them.

Yes, Mattress is weird. The exhibits change all the time, but that PVC pipe bleacher was there when I was there last. How about the smelly room full of like soap on the walls with things stuck in them. Didn't that smell awful?! Definitely weird. No, I've not been to Aviary. I don't even know what it is, but I'll be sure to check it out next time. Sounds like a zoo, the way you describe it. I saw on the news yesterday that the Three Points was flooded! I hope you didn't take my advise to go have a picnic there!
