School is good. Ancient Egypt is interesting and easy. High Concepts in Physics is occasionally mind-bending, and the professor is quite amusing ("Atoms are all that we are concerned with today - they're hot and sexy and ready to take you to bed"). Meager? That doesn't seem to fit in the sentence in the way you used it. Meager means inadequate or deficient.

With "my meager best," I am acknowledging and/or implying that my best isn't enough.

The overall meaning of the sentence was that, even though I may not feel like I'm performing well or meeting expectations, I am still doing my best and that neither me nor anyone else should ask any more from me than that ("that" being my best, regardless of how inadequate my best may seem).

In reviewing my thought process on that, I suppose the one other thing I could ask of myself - or that others could ask of me - is to embetter my best, if possible. Though, one could then put forward the argument that part of doing one's best is attempting at all times to embetter the efforts and results of one's best. I think I'd probably agree with that.
