Roland Emmerich is pretty much in the know that his plot sucks. I read an article where he basically says "I wanted to blow up the world again. But, you know, I'd already done it a few times. And there was this 2012 thing, so we made a story to string the bits between the blowing up together. Its not a good story though. Go to watch things get blown up. Not for the story."
