ISO stands for International Organisation for Standardisation, and they check standards and certify that companies come uop to scratch. In this case (standard 9001, or in fact, the 9000 group) the standard is for management systems, version 2000 (or 2004 soon).
They basically say you have a plan in place for how you're going to do things, and that you follow that plan. I just got my company certified as following the system so we get to stick the logo on all our literature and impress people by how well managed we are.
It's deeply boring stuff, but if anyone actually would pay me £500 a day (which some consultants seem to charge) I'd consider it. Maybe.
I just got our company though it after several months work, writing the manual, auditing it and all the processes it details, whipping people hard, rewriting things, making other people write things, wipping people harder, and generally making myself hugely popular with everyone.

The £500 sounds nice, though!
