I don't know Jennybean, I have imaginary conversations all the time. Sometimes with the fake voices of real people, sometimes day dreaming of celebrities... I kind of think it's just the adult version of playing make believe and it serves to keep our imaginations going, maybe helping us to come up with new or interesting ideas, or things we'd like to try out...
One thing I learned in my workshop is that the mind is extremely hard to control. Therefore, we learned to concentrate on our breathing so that when your thoughts take control, you have a focal point to return to.
What I suggest is that when you find that you are having one of these conversations, that you concentrate on your natural breathing. The most important thing is NOT to beat yourself up or get angry or frustrated every time you find yourself in one of those conversations. You just need to smilingly return your focus to your breathing. You may say to yourself, "Oh there I go again talking to myself." This is a technique that I found very useful and important.
