I just cannot believe how quickly this last week sped past, whooshing by like one of Douglas Adam's deadlines. There are just a few things left to deal with: Linc's toys and two last cabinets in the kitchen. The rest is just the bedding and toiletries in the morning.
Once again, I am stunned at how much STUFF we have, even after being ruthless about paring down. Ten boxes of books went to Half Price Books (when I say "box," I mean a 17"x13"x13", 1.5 cubic foot box). Five boxes of games (did you know HPB buys games? We didn't, but we do now!). A really huge pile of clothes, two boxes of Christmas decorations, kitchen stuff, tools, toys and more went out for the yard sale (and the leftovers, less than a quarter of what we started with, will go to the donation box at the local thrift... but later, after the move). We'll also have to deal with all the leftover furniture afterwards, as well (nine big pieces; already got rid of four). But we have until the end of the month; I'll attack it once graduation is done and Cord has flown to Davis. (Cordell was awarded DePaul University's 2014 Physics Student of the Year, and both Cord and Clay were given awards for scholastic excellence by their respective deans. Bill will be conferring their degrees this weekend, and I'm so freakin' proud of all of them!)
Since it's so late in the season to start a garden, I decided I'd kind of cheat... instead of turning and augmenting the existing soil, we dug up and cleaned the three garden boxes we built two years ago. Bill filled up two old garbage cans with the rich soil we used, we'll have the movers haul it all over tomorrow, and maybe Thursday I'll stick my starts in them. I had a few kale and tomato plants volunteers, so I carefully dug them up to bring them with me. I spent a good hour out there puttering with my plants, and it felt great!
In the middle of these last few weeks, my top front left tooth kept zinging, like I'd been biting on foil. It's been getting slowly worse, and last Friday evening, it really drove me crazy. I finally got into the dentist this morning, after fretting all weekend over the possibility of a cracked tooth, but fortunately it was only an inflamed nerve. Seems I may be grinding my teeth and doing some damage; trying out a mouthguard at night to see if it will help. But it's definitely not broken, and for that I am very grateful.
One thing I'm stressing about is our bikes. The ad describing the place had included "bike room" as one of the amenities, but... there's no such thing. The owner said that it was a mistake. We have a kind of deep closet storage room, less than 3 feet wide, that opens into a narrow hall and would be impossible to get a bike into, even if we didn't already have things we need to store in there. We are up three flights of stairs, and while we do have a deck, it is not huge; it will hold our smoker, a few small tables, and our two patio seats. Clay is willing to truck his bike up and down the stairs, but I don't see myself hauling my bike, the trailer, and Linc's bike up and down, even if there was room, which there isn't. There's a little space under the deck of the first floor apartments, where one tenant keeps a motorcycle, but we've been told that if we lock bikes under there, they will be stolen within the week. Any brilliant ideas about what to do? I'm considering one of
these, as well as a pile of locks.
Back to packing!
