Yay! Great final sentences! Loved his friendship with Harvey! And Beau!
I have a feeling that is the last JOhn ever saw of his father!

There is something, just so sad about leaving the house like they did. That got me almost as much as John's farewell to Beau and friends.
And don't get me started about the baby shoes! SOB!

Oh poor Reese's childhood traumas! So sad. I agree, I don't think his father ever returned. Vietnam Vet syndrome - I think he probably either killed himself or died somewhere, homeless, nameless, alone.

Thanks for sticking with me and being a mid-wife to this baby.

Masterful piece of writing, mamahub! Thank you for putting into words the horrific grief of losing a beloved parent in more ways than one. Frank's line about "no one is coming to save you" brought me tears. Bravo!

Thanks for commenting lhoule! I really appreciate it. Yes, in my head, our hero has had a really tough life, but he did have the love of a very good woman, his Mom, to help light the spirit of goodness in him from the beginning.

Thank you Managerie! I am really thankful for everyone's moral support. Don't know if I can pull another "baby" out of my head and onto the page again. But you never know. Now that I've gotten the first fic down, maybe it will become easier.

This is really a beautiful story! I'm glad you got it down on paper and shared it with us. Wonderful insight into John's past --I'm reading along and nodding, "Oh, yeah, that makes sense, yep, like that ..." Well reasoned and well told!

Thank you so much Lindao! I really appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it, even though it is very dark and sad.
