When the Seas Kiss the Sky

They stayed by the rail, arms around each other, until the last rays of the sun slipped beneath the horizon. Watching the stars as they came out, Will amazed her by pointing out the various constellations. Elizabeth marveled at the multitude of stars in the sky, the vastness of the universe. Just then she saw a falling star. Giving a little gasp of delight she pointed at the sky. “Did you see that? A falling star!”

A voice behind them made her jump. Jack had wandered up and was looking out at the sky along with them. “If you see stars fall and you make a wish they say that it's meant to be.”

Elizabeth looked over at him; he had a strange, wistful expression on his face as he gazed out at the sea and stars. In a quiet voice he continued.

“The islanders hereabouts tell a tale of two lovers who set sail. Becalmed they were, with nary a breath o’ wind to move them, with only love to set their course.” He turned and smiled. “But the winds, being a jealous lot, became envious, and enraged, for they had never seen a love so deep.”

Elizabeth held her breath and waited for Jack to continue, loath to break the mood.

“So, as luck would have it, just as the stars appeared, a storm blew up, and the two lovers were driven afoul of the reef. The winds, they laughed. But the stars were struck with grief. And, at that moment, two stars fortuitously fell from the sky, like tears, they were. Seeing these, the dying lovers made a wish that their love would be ever-lastingly eternal, and never die.”

“That is beautiful, Jack!” Elizabeth looked at Jack in surprise. “Beautiful, yet sad.”

He gave her a wistful smile and raised one finger. “Ah, but there is more to the tale. The gods heard the winds laughing and the lovers’ wish - a wish that was meant to be. And so the gods rushed in and they granted them that wish.”

He fell silent. The wind freshened and Elizabeth shivered slightly. “What happened to them?” she asked in a whisper.

Jack stared out at the horizon and said simply, “He became the sky. She became the sea.”

They stood there, the three of them, caught up in the tale of the two star-crossed lovers.

After a moment, Jack shook himself and returned to his usual self, repeating, “So if ever you might witness the falling of a star, best be making a wish, mate, being how it's meant to be and eternal and so on.”

“Although,” he grinned, eyes twinkling. “You best be careful of what you might be wishing for…” and with that, and a wave of a hand, sauntered off into the night.
