Drabbles - The Paradox of Time

What then is time? If no one asks me, I know what it is. If I wish to explain it to him who asks, I do not know.

What is time? Some say time is only an illusion of the mind, that time does not exist in the physical world. Time is not change, nor growth, or state of being. These are measured by the physical world - the turning of the tide, the rising of the sun, the phases of the moon.

Here, in the world between worlds there is no tide, no change. There is only present. Past and future exist only in the mind, through recall and expectations.

Does time exist?

For Will Turner, time only existed in his memories, in his hopes, in his dreams.

For those in the land of the living, time was the cause of change itself.

Time was a collection of instants, a causal event that encompassed everything. Here, nothing could happen without the influence of time. All things happened simultaneously because time encompassed all of them. Time was the unifying element that caused change, growth, state of being.

Time was the thread that linked the universe, holding all living and non-living things in perfect harmony.

For Jack Sparrow, time didn’t stop that moment when time ceased to exist for Will, but marched on relentlessly. Changes and growth were the enemies now. For to grow, was to age. To age was to die. To die was to pass beyond, leaving all hopes and dreams behind. All love.

Barely able to grasp the thread that bound them, his universe askew in disharmony, he sought the elixir of life, the cessation of time.
