“You there! Halt!”

The sound of running footsteps followed. Jack and Will stopped and turned, to find two Marines with rifles pointed in their direction. Will’s hand strayed to the hilt of his sword, whereas Jack launched into his own attack with a flutter of hands.

“What an opportune moment!” He waved at the street from which they’d come. “We were just now lamenting at the lack of presence the Royal Navy has given this town. Why not only last night we were almost victim to the most vile of crimes, and it were only me wits and my fine friend’s sword that prevented us being robbed blind.”

Jack advanced on the two soldiers, who backed away in confusion, and continued to prattle on. “Two ruffians, vile and dissolute creatures, accosted us in the most daring of fashion and demanded our valuables.” He peered at them and asked, “Why are you here, wasting time chatting with us, when you could be out there, apprehending these scoundrels?”

“We were told to look for two men,” the first one said.

The second one added, “Description given matches you.”

“Frock coat, tricorn hat, wild hair.”

“Known to be traveling with an accomplice.”

Will glanced surreptitiously down the nearest alley, eyeing their potential escape route while tightening his grip on his sword.

Jack merely waved the words away. “Bullocks. Must be dozens of men in this town fitting that description.”

“Like that one,” Will offered, pointing across the street, where an unkempt vagrant was rooting through a pile of trash.

“Exactly!” Jack said brightly.

“He’s right, you know,” the second marine said. “Could have been him.”

“Could have been any of them,” the first agreed, nodding towards a group of drunken sailors making their way towards the wharf.

“Seems a wild goose chase if you ask me,” the second one said.

“We could spend half the night chasing them all,” the first one added.

Jack, meanwhile, was slowly sidling his way towards the alley beyond, his accomplice following his lead, as the two marines continued to discuss the matter. They would be long gone before their absence was noted.

“That was close,” Will said, once they’d reached the relative safety of the smithy.

Jack smiled and pulled Will into an embrace. “What? Those two dim-wits?” He pecked a kiss on Will’s cheek. “Sometimes the tongue is mightier than the sword.”

Will could only agree.
