All play and no work made Jack a guilty-feeling boy. It wasn't that he'd done nothing all week, exactly, it was just that half of what he'd done had involved the pool, the deck around it, and sleeping too much. Yes, he'd spent a full day trying to get up on the hotel's roof (and failing), and another day walking around outside, measuring exactly how far he could get before being turned around again, but no real progress had been made. So, he decided that maybe research would at least feel like being useful.

If nothing else, he'd at least find a book to read, right?

And hour after making that decision, he was on the floor, surrounded by a dozen books open to a random page, making notes on the hotel's notepaper. He wondered if they really could maybe cannibalize a heater, or one of the cars down in the garage, and some gas from the kitchen to create a functional jetpack. It could be a fun project. He scanned the books again- half a dozen on aerodynamics, two physics books open to the section of energy conversion and fuels, several others about practical design- and Papillon, in the original French, for inspiration.
