[It's not quite a Christmas message from the Queen... but all the same, there's Elizabeth, sitting at her desk, look exceedingly tired. It might be a festive season but she's got far too much on her mind. Still, she's a woman whose dealt with far worse, faced war and persecution and her own execution -- what is a few family problems

I'm not keen on having my mother-in-law breathing down our necks. Does she know about... you know... yet? Can we get her sent home?

You mean you are not keen to -- and no she doesn't. I hadn't thought to tell her such things until she was settled. [She goes absolutely livid at the last bit. Like her temper needs much of an excuse at the moment.] Gabriel! Never say such a thing again.

I'm so sorry for voicing an opinion you don't like about your saintly mother. It was actually, you know, a joke but I see you're above such things. Nothing can be funny unless it has a royal freakin' decree!

That is not what I meant, do not twist my words. But now that you mention it, how is my mother's returning home supposed to be a joke?

What did you mean? That I can't say what I think? I'm sorry sweet-cakes, that doesn't fly with me.
How is your mother's returning home a joke? How about, how is your mother a joke? Have you seen the attitude problem on that woman? Hells if I married her...

I thought you'd show some respect for my mother of all people. Just the same as I would show to your brothers. [Even Lucifer.]
[But she can't believe he's saying that. To her of all people.] How dare you -- if nothing else she gave birth to me. [she clench her jaw shut.] If you married her, what?

[Okay. Okay. Now he knows he's said the wrong thing. Oh boy does he know. But it's too late now, and her rage- oh he can imagine her bristling even if he can't see her- is just feeding his own]
I wouldn't make the mistake of marrying her in the first place!

[her knuckles turn white where they grip her chair, still seething.]
Happily, you won't be. So why do you insist on being so vile about her?

Oh hells. You think her being here will change that? Do you think it will save her? Your history, her history, it's already happened. You can't stop that, none of us can! Been and done, written in stone!
[And though you can't see it, you probably can't even hear the fire alarms, several small fires have started on the other side of the city] Because I don't like her! And I don't think you would, if she wasn't your saintly mother.

[Now she wanted to scream, because did he think she'd forgotten? Anymore than what was to happen to her.] Shut up! Stop it -- stop ruining it. [shaking, all of her was, and it was an effort to keep her voice even.] She's going to just like I am going to turn cold. If it's all so pointless, than what are you doing with me?
She is still my mother. That matters more than any other opinion. [She'd been raised to absolute and blind subservience to her parents after all.] I'm not telling you to like her, I just want to be happy that my mother is here without anyone ruining it.

[Shut up? Shut up?] That's a good fucking question! What the hell am I doing? Why am I putting myself through this? Jumping through hoops to impress you? To try and do nice things for you? All you want to do is lie to people. You don't know how to relax. Well, I'm sorry, some of us can't exist with corsets in our souls.
Fine. Fine! You two enjoy each other's company. You can do it without me. [And with that he closes a fist around the phone, and it crumples]

[she ignores the rest of that, because it's not worth replying to as far as she cares.]
Three of us -- not that you'll be seeing a hair on my child's head.
[and then it's cut.]
