So we got to Cologne in the early afternoon on October 5th, after taking the train from Trier. We arrived too early to check in to our hotel, in fact, but we were at least able to leave our bags at the front desk, so that was fine. The hotel was CityClass Hotel Europa am Dom. Jonathan and I got up early to be at the Basilica San Marco 15 minutes before it opened. The line was already quite long! Just in time, as it turned out: though we were in line by 9:30, we didn't get inside until 10:00. On this day the couples mostly did separate activities. Jonathan and I started off by approaching Piazza San Marco from the west side, which was less flooded. The approach to the basilica was still pretty wet and crowded but we could at least see it.
