I don't think drinking is an inherently awful thing to do; I've had some awful experiences with it, but those have primarily had to do with my stomach, and I've had someone wonderful ones that have to do with amazing times with my friends. It's something I've been thinking about recently though, as I haven't had the best times drinking over here, nothing bad, it is just that the drinking that tends to happen here involves going out and loud music which aren't really my thing. My friend Crista came to visit though, and we drank in the way that I think is best, at home while baking and playing board games (the baking bit is best to do at the start of the drinking when oven operation is still reasonable). It was a wonderful, comfortable, and relaxing time, and I think what made it good was that we would have had a wonderful time without alcohol as well.
So I guess my conclusion is that alcohol is great in situations where you are comfortable and already in a mood you'd like to be in; in other situations I am less approving.

i think it's okay to change your opinion. i think it's okay to enjoy yourself. i also think it's okay to enjoy yourself because you changed your opinion and not feel badly about it. like maura said, drinking with friends you feel comfortable and safe with can lead to a great time. not drinking can also lead to a great time. i think as long as you're okay with it, don't beat yourself up about it. if it feels wrong while you're doing it, don't do it. just my opinion. love you!

the way I see it, what's the difference with drinking a cup of coffee in the morning to wake you up, and having a glass of wine in the evening to relax you? They both alter you (well, they do me). It's the addiction to EITHER that isn't good--it's allowing something else to have control of you other than the Spirit.

"Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone."
Matthew 5:17-20 ESV
