LEONARD NIMOY

In which I squee about standing next to some old guy who played an alien in a sci-fi show back in the sixties.

Not much more need be said that cannot be deduced by the title of this blog, other than some specifics: a couple weeks ago I learned the legendary Leonard Nimoy (famous for playing Mr Spock in the Star Trek Original Series) was going to be attending his last convention in Chicago. I'd just recently watched all and sunder pertaining to the original series, had fallen in love with the character of Spock, and greatly admired Mr Nimoy, that I figured this wasn't an opportunity I should miss, seeing as it would be my last chance. So I bought a General Sunday admission to the three-day Star Trek convention and a Photo Op with Leonard Nimoy.

On Sunday, October 2nd, I woke up at 5am, arrived at the Minneapolis airport at 6am, boarded flight 3535 to Chicago at 7:55am; arrived in Chicago at 9:10am, hung out at the hotel until Leonard Nimoy's final panel at 1:50pm (which was preceded by a lovely set of blogs done by the cast of the new Star Trek movie wishing him a great 45 year run), dashed off for the photo at 3:05pm, loitered around until my photo was ready to pick up at 6:15pm; took a shuttle back to the O'Hare Airport at 6:45pm, flight 701 finally allowed to leave the ground after 15 minutes of weight errors at 8:09pm, and finally back in Minneapolis at 9:22pm the same day.

Not only did I get to meet a legend, but I did so by myself. I've never boarded a plane myself and gone flying off to a different state alone before, so that was a novel experience. The closest I can come to matching that is the 14+ hour flight to Japan back in 2006 when I was a People to People student ambassador, but there were 50 other people on that trip. This was just me, with my passion for Star Trek and in particular, Leonard Nimoy, flying off to a convention by myself because I wanted to. And what's really great about this was that it was a success! Nothing went horribly array, which has provided me with the confidence that I could do something like this again. This sort of independence for me is brilliant. Sure, it was just to Chicago for a day, with my destination only five minutes from the airport, but it takes baby steps.

And now, the pride and joy of my labor.
