I doubt LJ will listen - it seems like a mess over there. There are a lot of people who want the purges apparently and have been whining about it for a long time?
We have a project started, bandomficsave that might help in bandom. It doesn't touch the dozens of other fandoms tho :( Honestly , other than helping Kasu out with that - I'm just trying to back up as much old stuff as I can :p (My mission right now is danimpa I would seriously cry if all Danie's stuff was lost.)
I made a separate post about this because it angers me so much. It's tantamount to burning books for no goddamn reason. There is so much of value that will be lost if they go through with this!
And as much as I admire projects like yours, you can't possibly save everything. And even if it could, you're in somewhat dangerous territory publicly hosting an author's fic without their explicit permission, even if it is for a good cause.
I know the responses in the first few pages are somewhat mixed but fandom has started to come out against this and the back half are overwhelmingly negative. You and I are certainly not the only ones enraged and/or devastated by it. The announcement has only been out for a few hours; I'd expect to see a wave of angry posts in the next few days and a full scale mobilization by the end of the week. We've forced LJ to listen to us before; I think it's time to do it again.
Yes- I worried about the author permission thing- and we're trying to be as careful as we can. Trying to contact authors first and disclaiming that if an author wants their work taken down they can contact us and we will. (But I'm thinking if an author is THAT awol, they won't care , or even know about it ) Plus as long as we leave the original credit, once it's been publicly posted- it's in the public domain- it's like if they published a novel, we could put that novel in whatever library we wanted to, they couldn't take it back because they were suddenly embarrassed by it - internet publishing is still publishing. I don't want to step on any toes so I try to respect an author's wishes anyway if I know them, but really ... yeah - that's a whole other issue LOL
I agree with you about standing up though. We are the consumers they should listen to us.
I wonder if this will fuel another exodus to Dreamwidth :D
Looks like the crisis is averted, bb! LJ clarified their policy in the news post and won't be purging any journal or community with more than one post.
I'm glad you like it, lol. After I wrote it I was kind of annoyed by how cliche it was sounding but I think it'll be alright. I'm hoping to post this weekend! :D
