Terrible Tumble

Apr 20, 2008 09:15

Yesterday I was riding my bike to work at 7:15am. It had been lightly raining until around 6:45am, so the roads were a bit slick ( Read more... )

Wow! glad you're ok! I've been hit before- it sucks because they have all the power- if they don't see you and keep going you're kinda fucked. Mine involved some ass making a right turn so he was looking left and hit me and pinned my leg against my frame- luckily I yelled out and he turned and saw me and stopped- if he had just gunned it and went I mighta been screwed.
Well get back on that "horse" soon!

So, if the driver hadn't stopped it would have crushed your leg??
That's pretty crazy. Good thing you are so loud.
Speaking of loud, Mike and Paddy play their music until at least 5:30am. Last night was bad, cause I was up half dreaming about bike crashes. So, today I asked them if they really needed to play music between 4 and 5:30- since I usually wake up at 4 or so automatically, and it is really hard to get back to sleep when their bass is pumping? Mike said they definitely had to play music then, cause that's the rockin hour. Never knew.

yeah- it is a fuzzy memory- (it happened in the mid 90's so maybe I was listening to some screaming trees or something)- anyways I think I kind of jumped from my bike in time because I could feel the bumper squeeze my leg into my frame and that is still the only real vivid thing I remember- it kind of freaked me out, which is, I think, why I can still remember that part so well. So I just ripped my leg out of there real quickly and kind of jump/fell into the street. My front wheel was messed up. He paid for a new one. Did the car that hit you stop?!

perhaps this biking pleasantness will soothe those bad dreams...

Almost the same thing that happened to Jered happened to me last summer. A lady on her cell phone was making a right turn and pulled out in front of me. My bike hit her car pretty hard and I went flying onto her hood. Then she ran over my foot. All this and she didn't even get off her phone. I didn't wear a helmet at the time. I do now.
You know when driving I notice a lot of young kids riding in a very unsafe manner and it pisses me off. Even if you do everything right you still can get hurt and then you see kids just riding out in the road not paying attention.

I remember this story!! It's illegal to drive while talking on your cell phone within Chicago city limits.
For the most part, cyclists here seem to pay a lot of attention, and many of the roads (or at least all the roads I ride on) either have separate bike lanes on the far right or at least a shared bike lane on the right. Also, there is a strict law about obscuring the bike lanes and one that says cars must stay at least 3 feet clear of cyclists. Of course, often there are cops parked in bike lanes, and busses constantly come within inches of cyclists, but at least the laws exist.

We only have one bike lane in GR. It runs about two miles through East Grand Rapids. The other streets in East Grand Rapids have these stupid little areas where the curb jets out to to block cars from going around when someone makes a left turn. Unfortunately, they also make it impossible to ride on the shoulder of the road.

Before I tell em, I'm happy you're okay. Scary stuff. I think it's nice that the guy was crying, I mean it shows that humans aren't so bad ( ... )

oh my god mandy. i am so glad you are okay! the thing about the helmet fitting is really crazy and awesome.

i don't have any scary bike stories, so i guess i am lucky too, since i ride my bike a fair amount and don't wear a helmet. it's always been exhilarating to engage in risky behavior, but lately I've been doing it less and less. I'm almost 30 and getting boring.
