Yeah, I'm blazing through my CD collection by listening to 3-4 new ones a day.
So here's a quick summary:
Stars- Heart // I get to see them open this Friday at the DCfC show and damn, I'd seriously almost rather buy tickets to Death Cab's Saturday show than Deck the Hall Ball just because the Stars are amazing. Seriously, they should be headlining their own show instead of opening for someone else (though they probably need the exposure). God I'm so excited to listen to their other CDs now. Standout tracks on Heart are Elevator Love Letter (upbeat song), Heart (slow song), and Death to Death, which they have a horrible transition into but the story the song tells was quite creative. The guitar part in Romantic Comedy sounds like it's straight out of a Metric song (while the song reminds me of a more subdued Belle & Sebastian). They sound like what happens if Belle & Sebastian, Ben Gibbard, and Mae had a baby. I don't care for the songs where the guy sings, but the female singer has a pretty voice.
Mae- Everyglow // Gentle pop rock. Kailah would like it. I thought it sounded bland.
OC Mix 4 // Damn that producer for making such bad shows while having such good taste in music. It has the popular song from Sufjan Stevens (you'd probably recognize it if you heard it), it opens with the Futureheads, and it has one of my favourite Imogen Heap songs (Goodnight and Go) on it. It was really good, which is dissapointing because I never wanted to like anything associated with that show. The Subways will be on the Thursday show, according to the commerials in-between House last night. Ugh, I know that The Subways are going to be like the next Killers or Franz Ferdinand, but they bother me. That song Rock n Roll Queen sounds like a corny Jet rip off, but I wouldn't be so critical if so much undeserved hype was surrounding them. I think they're going to turn into the first generation of corporate media pre-packaged indie rock.
Wolf Parade- EP // Listening to their EP befor their CD was probably a bad strategy, god knows if I'd heard the Arcade Fire EP before Funeral I probably wouldn't have wanted to listen to an entire CD by them in the first place. Their EP was okay, nothing really stood out to me but nothing was annoying either. I was expecting a lot more.
Metric- Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? // I've always had 124738912347 Metric songs on my computer, so I'd already heard over half of all of this CD before I gave it a proper runthrough. Not surprising, my favorites were Succexy, Hustle Rose, Combat Baby, and Dead Disco. I never realized how the songs from this CD were mostly speaking out against war until I listened to the entire thing.
Metric- Grow Up & Blow Away // Familiarity breeds comfort. The only songs I loved off of this were Grow Up & Blow Away, and Soft Rock Star (probably my favourite Metric song). The rest of the songs were good, but I didn't think they were as good as Old World Underground. Er, the problem I have with her CDs is that the good songs are AMAZINGLY good and just overshadow everything else on the album. But that might just be because I've listened to individual tracks by her so many times that I don't care as much for the songs I haven't heard as often. Still, I think Metric is great material for mix CDs, since I don't enjoy listening to her albums straight through as much as I enjoy hearing songs by her in-between other aritsts.
