voice actors should be seen and not heard

Feb 05, 2009 04:19

I was a little disappointed when I put in my final Avatar DVD and saw that the last two commentaries were for episodes 3.16 and 3.17. To be clear: I was delighted that 3.17 had commentary, because I love that episode like I gave birth to it, but I was surprised that the creators didn't choose to comment on any part of the two-hour finale (episodes ( Read more... )

You already got and watched the entire thing? That was certainly fast work.

Do you want to arrange a time for a viewing party?

These were Netflix DVDs. I moved them back to the top of my queue when I fell in love with Avatar via TiVo. I didn't realize at the time that Nicktoons was going to show 2-3 episodes every single day (I love you, Nicktoons), but even if I had, renting the DVDs meant that I would be able to see the show from the beginning in proper order.

Which doesn't mean we can't have a viewing party. Until I do buy the DVDs*, I'm keeping the episodes on my TiVo. If you wanted to come to my apartment, we could watch those.

* I'm actually buying the DVD sets in reverse order, due to budget constraints. Come here to watch seasons 1 and 2, then (if w_10_00 comes out in March) we can watch the third season from your comfy couch.

That sounds fine with me. When is a good time for you to have me over?

And do you want me to bring anything?

YES! How about this Saturday (tomorrow!) or next Sunday (2/15)? As for bringing anything...either bring Amparo-snacks or let me know what you'd like to nibble and sip so I can make sure I have it on hand?

Oh, no commentary for the finale is disappointing. :/ I just can't imagine they didn't have anything to say about it. Oh well.

Did Dee Bradley Baker do the voices in Nightmares and Daydreams? Secretly, I'm glad you brought up Momo and Appa, because it gives me a chance to show off my icon.

Secretly, I only mentioned Momo and Appa because I was hoping to see a Momo Yojimbo icon.

I'm not sure. I don't seen any other actors getting credit for talking Momo and Appa, and Dee Baker is credited with incidental voices in every episode, so I bet he did do their speaking parts as well. I'll haveto rewatch teh commentary as soon as my DVDs arrive.

And speaking of casting: did you know that Azula's voice actress also played Katara's Mom in 3.16 and actress!Katara in 3.17? One would think they made these choices just to blow my mind.

Now I'm thinking I need to re-keyword my icon, because it did not occur to me to call it "Momo Yojimbo" and clearly it should be. (I wonder if that makes the icon disappear from that comment? Let's find out!)

I did not know that! My mind is blown as well. Also, I think voice actors are kind of amazing.

ETA: Yes, it does make the icon go away. And I forgot you can't edit a comment once it's been replied to. Woe!

Sadness! I demand that you reply to this using the Momo Yojimbo icon. Even if your reply is just the sound of a bison whistle.

As long as we're talking about commentaries, you know what I hate? When the commentators have to stop so we can hear some certain line or scene. Um, guys, we can turn you off. I wonder how many people who do commentaries have ever bothered listening to someone else's commentary.

(I also hate when one person does the commentary alone. I'm looking at you, Joss Whedon.)

So, I just got my season 3 DVDs last night (yay!), and I just thought I should let you know that there IS a commentary for the finale. You just have to select "more" from the extras menu. (Or just change the audio when you're watching the episode.)

Unless you have already figured this out, in which case, ignore me and go back to making your Hug List.

First, that's excellent news and thanks for letting me know. I MIGHT be getting my season 1 and season 3 box today or tomorrow (*refreshes tracking*), so that gives me something to look forward to if the cute chibi shorts are in Book 2. (Drop the price on Book 2, Amazon!)

I still have season 3, volume 4 from Netflix (I can't part with it until I get my own box), and the Main Menu offers 3 options: Play, Special Features, and Scene Selection. The Special Features menu has only 3 options: audio commentary for 16, audio commentary for 17 (wheee!), and back to Main Menu. So I suspect Netflix is renting out the individual DVDs and the box set has extras the individual DVDs did not. I kinda hate that, considering I collect lots of series in individual DVDs.

Ah, I was thinking you might have already gotten your box. I suspect you would have figured it out, too, then, since the back of the Book 3 box advertises commentary for the finale. Which makes me think that maybe you're right. I kind of hate it too, since I think of box sets in general as being for fans who specifically waited for cheaper versions, while the individual discs are for the more dedicated fans who can't wait for the box and/or are willing to spend more to get pretty cover art* (or whatever). And companies always seem to reward the patient and/or cheap fans, which annoys me.

On the other hand, maybe it's just a menu glitch. Did you try switching the audio while you were watching the episode?

*Let's not talk about how I kind of want to buy Book 3, Volume 1 because the cover is so pretty.
